Any word on 3DS sales? We didn't get anything from last month.

Down YOY.......................A lot.

I know what the numbers are, but can't tell you for now, i just can say this.

That's not good.  What about vita?  Did vita + vita TV sell much more than the 20k Vgchartz predicted?

I had a debate with a user, can't remember who, who predicted that Rise of the Tomb Raider will sell around 200k for the month. I was convinced it wouldn't flop that hard. Guess I was wrong and to who I had the debate with you were right.

How did it flop this bad, the signs were there but MS had the power to make this sell. It had the exclusive gloss, it was coming off the back of a succeessful reboot, it had its own bundle, it was releaseing in a peak part of the year and somehow it this happened. That article about MS and SE being happy with sales is a load of bullshit.

A retailer exclusive bundle, which means MS couldn't even be bothered making enough cardboard boxes to be able to make the bundle available through all retailers. Instead MS chose to prioritise its cardboard box making on to all other hardware skus and RoTR cardboard boxes were at the back of the queue. They needlessly slapped the game into a 1TB Xb one which immediately made it uncompetitive with its own 500GB hardware bundles. MS did pretty much everything it could to convince Xb one buyers to choose something other than the RoTR bundle. And all game marketing effort went into FO4 which meant bugger all existing Xb one owners were really looking out for the game come launch time, because they all had Fallout shoved in their face.

Word on the street is that Tomb Raider sold sub 200k on Xbox One and 360 (overtracked on Chartz)... this is the ultimate flop and Microsoft lied when it said it was happy. OMG... sub 200k. WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED? Why didn't Xbox gamers support this game?

It's because it's not financially worth it for MS. PS4 was already estimated to be slightly cheaper to manufacture than a Kinectless Xbox One from the get go. And the more you sell, the faster the cost of the parts will go down. Obviously Sony has been selling more worldwide from day 1. When Microsoft unbundled the Kinect, that also lost them money due to the projections they had for the device and the deals they had made with manufacturers based on those projections. Later in the year, MS had a price cut and some crazy deals during the holidays such as getting an XB1 for the value of $150, if you also buy 5 games. In spite of XB1 being more expensive to make than PS4. MS made these investments because they hoped it would pay off in the long run. Early adopters are more likely to buy more games than late adopters, and if XB1 was able to dominate the US, it would give them more momentum. (People play on the console their friends are playing on, etc.)

It's now come to the point where they have to look at how much they've spent to try to beat Sony in the US, and what that has given them. If they have to spend X amount of dollars more to be ahead of Sony by 200k units in lifetime sales in the US, and keep doing that every year, will it be worth it?
They had Halo 5 and Tomb Raider exclusively on their platyform this holiday, while Sony had no particular exclusives besides an Uncharted Remake. And it still wasn't enough.
At that point, investors and management alike will be more interested in being profitable than keep fighting a losing battle where they have to put in a lot more effort (money) than the opposition just to do that much.

I fully agree with this, but what really worries me is market share, with PS4 having probably more than 60% or 65% worldwide, and this situation is getting better for Sony every single day. Another point: every 30 days the world is told that PS4 continues to dominate the market, and that has the potential to have influence even in the NEXT generation of consoles. Having such a small market share isn't healthy, at least from my point of view.

Well what happens in that scenario is that Sony will get more Japanese developed games on their console that skip out on Xbox, without the need to sign an exclusive deal with Sony. We know this because we're seeing more and more of that every month, mostly with rpg's, fighting games and things like that. That's always going to happen to a degree, since it's a Japanese console. But it's also bolstered by marketshare (like with PS2). You can still count on most of the biggest Japanese titles like Resident Evil and Metal Gear to still end up on Xbox. And all the western games will always be on Xbox as long as it's sucessful and sells a good amount, which XB1 is obviously going to do. And of course if there are any exclusive deals, or marketing deals, Sony will need to pay less for those than MS does.
However, if you're mainly a fan of western games and not so much of Japanese games, then an Xbox owner should be mostly unaffected by Playstation's marketshare. And as long as Xbox is successful, you'll keep getting the games you like.

I'm not sure if anyone has the answer to what you can do to beat Sony woirldwide, other than Sony messing things up for themselves, like they did with the PS3 launch. Apparently it's not such an easy lesson learned either, or else MS wouldn't have screwed up their own launch as badly as they did this time around with XB1, so who knows, we might see Sony doing something stupid for PS5's launch as well.

Changing topics a little bit: I think it'd be interesting to see both Sony and Microsoft launching new systems without doing something stupid. If that happens in the next-gen, we will see the full potencial of Xbox and PlayStation worldwide at the same time. Some may argue that PS2 is the potential of the PlayStation brand, but I think it can do A LOT more.

I wasn't expecting to see Just Dance there. I honestly thought it was dead at this point.

Maybe a new generation is getting into it?
My kids (4 and 6) like to watch the videos on you tube to dance along with and were very excited when they found out it was a game. So they're getting it for Christmas. Apparently our oldest favorite is One erection. We're bad parents for not correcting him on that one :)

I think the point was that VGChartz has things pretty wrong right now w/o the official numbers plugged in.  If they were accurate, todays announcement and ensuing pages of comments would've probably played out a bit differently.  On the other hand, is the 3DS pummeling the VITA a surprise to anyone? heh

Well im just glad that VGChartz was able to get their sales back up and going, we probably still back in September by now. But since Sony doesn't give us Vita sales, we have Vgchartz to rely on.

And same thing goes to the PS4 and the Wii U. I'll be surprised if anyone is surprised how the PS4 is slaying the Wii U =D

Oh it's def nice to have the site back up and running the numbers, certainly.  Maybe I'm wrong, but wouldn't NPD give those numbers?

If you are talking about the Vita. Sadly i can't remember when was the last time Sony or NPD gave numbers for it. Even in this financial report, the Vita wasn't even mentioned.

What's shocking is the Nintendo Wii SKU was the top selling, and by a big margin. More than 1/3rd of sales were the Wii version.

It's 2015....

What worries me most is the potential monopoly that might emerge... I at least hope that if it comes down to that buyers do something... otherwise, I am calling double standards!

If Sony can manage to be not stupid for 2 generations in a row, then it is likely that Sony would take more market share off Xbox even if Xbox totally leanrs its gen 8 lessons. Whoever has the most momentum going into a generation transition has the major advantage, and if they are the leading console for the outgoing generation then it's a double advantage. PS3 was the lowest selling console of last gen, but it had the greatest momentum going in to the 8th gen, even before Wii U launched. Nintendo screwed up with Wii U, MS screwed up with Xb one. And here we are.

Now, assuming Sony doesn't screw up the back half of this generation and it holds the momentum card Sony's position will be immensely stronger than it was at the start of the 8th gen. And while MS's position will be more favourable, the market will still be strongly oriented towards Playstation. MS actually needs to knock PS4 off its stride before the next generation hits in order to make serious inroads into market share for a 9th gen.
