Forums - Nintendo - The sad state of Mario spin-off games this gen. <(T_T<)

Yeah... specially the WiiU games...... Mario Tennis Ultra Smash is awful, Mario Party is average, still fun, but could be a lot better. Mario & Sonic at Sochi is beautiful visually but has awkward controls

As for the 3ds the scenario is way better. Mario Golf World Tour is a blessing and Mario & Luigi is also great.
I enjoyed Paper Mario Sticker Star and Mario Tennis Open a lot too. Not masterpieces, but still fun games. Mario & Sonic London 2012 on the 3ds seems way better than its home console counterpart, with its focus on multiplayer and an interesting story mode.

The only spin-off on the 3ds that really dissapointed me was Mario Party Island Tour. A huuuuuuuge step down compared to Mario Party DS.

As for Mario Kart..... Mario Kart is a league on its own.

ehhhh

most Mario Party's and Mario sports games for the last generation or two have been fairly mediocre. the Mario Party games already started to suck arguably at the end of the Gamecube era and Mario Tennis / Mario Golf have always been games that have limited amount of content just due to their style and agenda

as long as there a good 3D Mario mainline games, good Smash games, good Mario Kart games- that's a priority. I enjoy Party and Tennis but obviously those are second or third tier (although they really need to stop making terribly Party games, go back to the old formula)

They were all great on the N64 and GCN, so there's no reason the quality they all once had can't atleast be replicated on newer systems. Yeah I get they had to prioritize their better sellers with their limited resources, but many of the ones they did make are the worst installments in their respective series. There's really no excuse for the original Mario Tennis from 20 years ago having more content and better gameplay depth than Ultra Smash, for example.

I hated Mario & Luigi 3DS, why I have no interest in Paper Jam. If only Paper Mario would go back to what made the first 2 games so awesome...

Upcoming Games To Get

Definite: Kirby Star Allies (Switch), Mario Tennis Aces (Switch), Fire Emblem (Switch), Yoshi (Switch), Pokemon (Switch), Kingdom Hearts 3 (PS4), Monster Hunter World (PS4)

Considering: Fe (Switch), Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (Switch), The World Ends With You (Switch), Ys VIII (Switch), Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition (PS4), Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Remix (PS4), The Last Guardian (PS4), Shadow of the Colossus HD (PS4), Anthem (PS4), Shenmue 3 (PS4), WiLD (PS4)

Tennis Open is alright yeah, but the giant steaming pile of turd that is Ultra Smash weighs the franchise overall down heavily this gen. Honestly I don't know anything about World Tour, only that it had day 1 DLC, so yeah. :L

Yeah, the Mario spin offs this gen were all rather terrible, except MK8. Hopefully they do better next gen.

Should Super Mario Maker be considered a spinoff?

Paper Mario has 4 games. 2 were great, 1 was very good and the last was average but you deem it as garbage?

Sticker Star, as a Paper Mario, really is garbage. It has nothing that made the first 3 games awesome, minus the soundtrack and visuals of course.

Its actually good news. Nintendo may focus on making new games rather than re-hash 10 Mario themed games.

The main series, Mario Kart and the RPG sub-series is more than enough.

I believe Nintendo themselves consider it a mainline entry which is why they added Super to the title.

What's Mario done to you?
