Forums - Gaming - What's with the hate for turn based RPGs?

As a general rule, turn-based rpgs are more cerebral. It's not just the action at hand when a command is executed. It's more so what are your options, what options do you choose, how does your action effect the actions of your teammates, what are the results of the over all actions of your teammates on the enemy. So from a superficial POV, turned-based rpgs might look stupid. That's because the person thinking it's stupid is stupid. Or impatient to say the least, not willing to understand the system before passing judgement. And turn-based gameplay isn't outdated by any mean. It just isn't as marketable to a sea of mind-numbing masses.

Great way to generalize. I have probably been playing games before youw ere born and I am far froms tupid. Turn based is boring and takes no skill whatsoever. All you have to do is grind until you level up. Bloodborne takes far more skill than any turn based system and it actually needs strategy and patiens in order to defeat the lowest level of enemies. Notice BB has outsold any JRPG not named FF for the firs time in forever. Continue with your childish elist way of thinking though since you are obviously over compensating for something else.

Yeah but you'd better REALLY love battling or else you risk getting sick of the game on day one lol. It's happened to me before.

Never happend to me, personally. I've done it many times. Barvely default was a fun test. I wanted to see how high you needed to be at the start. To be able to handle the whole game. Without getting stuck at grind points. I had to be level 30 to be able to play nonstop. With its fast foward and increase random encounters. I was able to do it within a week.

I got Xenoblade for Wii back in 2012 and I still haven't finished it because I got to a point where in order to advance, I had to grind the same damn area for like 4-5 hours. The same, exact monsters, over... and over... and over... and over again. By the time I was barely able to defeat the boss I was trying to defeat, I was burnt out. A year later, I decided to finish the game so I booted it up, started playing, had a really good time and then... guess what? Another boss I couldn't beat without a few hours of grinding. Just no... NOOOOO!! lol.

Grinding is number 1 on my list of hated things in gaming. There hasn't been a game created in the history of this industry that has made grinding fun for me. I avoid it like the plague lol

The excellence that is Final Fantasy 12 destroyed turn based games forever. The gambit system is mostly real time and it allowed as much control as the most intricate turn based system.

One of the best things of turn based systems is that you can enjoy the battle theme at ease....that better be a good song though because you are going to hear it a lot!!

I don't ridicule turn based rpg's. However, turn based rpg's are the reason why I don't like rpg's. I thought they were all turn based. I was wrong.....

This

I ignored rpgs for a long time for that reason.

I've never really liked turn based games. Not even back in the days.  I guess they're just not for me.

The majority of people who think that way don't have the patience to even play a game if they have to wait more than 10 seconds until action hits

It also has to do with the game itself. There are a lot of generic turn-based games out there who made it really boring x~x I own a few PSP RPGs which have a "average" turn based system but the way the game and system is presented is so boring I can't play through it.

Some games are better at showing turn based than others, I love how Final Fantasy X and 7 did turn based, the entire Dragon Quest series does it well, Shin Megami Tensei does a great job at turn based as does its various spin offs like Persona, and then the big one being Pokemon. It's not outdated, anyone saying that is full of shit. A core mechanic like that cannot be outdated, the way it is handled and presented can be -but not the mechanic. That's like saying chess is unplayable nowadays since you have to take turns

I think the problem is most gamers can subconciously tell when a turn based system is gameplay Vs when its substituted for gameplay. Back when I was playing RPG maker games, 99% of them that used the default turn based battle system was garbage, but there was one that was extremely good, I forget its name but the main characters were named after colors

Well exactly. The turn based system can easily done bad. RPG Maker has an awful battle system if you don't tweak it. Same goes for a lot of turn based games. Then again that goes for anything, if it isn't executed right then it can be bad :P

Turn based can be kinda fun, but it's definitely my least favorite battle system, and i find it kind of dull. I tend to tolerate battles in turn based games, whereas with action RPGs i look forward to them.

I love TBS's, though. Somehow when you add a grid things just get so much more exciting.

Turn based kinda reminds me of chess or Warhammer tabletop, thus I enjoy it likely bit more than you do!?

    CU......or CF ?

I don't love turn based RPG's but I don't hate them. Turn based RPG's were the original RPG's from the days board-game D&D was first brought across to computer gaming. It simulated the rolling of the dice each round, and helped make the games possible when computing power was scarce. Now days those limitations no longer exist, and so turn-based RPG's are outdated in that regard.

But just like platforming, just because it outdated doesn't mean it can't be fun as hell. It just needs to be done properly. If you are going to make it turn based, then the battles actually need to have some strategy to them, otherwise it just becomes mind-numbing. But it also needs to be quick, as turn-based battles break the immersion between the game and the player.

I think the break in immersion is probably the biggest turn-off to newer gamers these days, because in most other genres gaming has trended towards more 'realistic' and 'lifelike' in order to increase the immersion between the gamer and game. But if the battles are at least quick and require strategy (rather than just jumping through hoops) then they can be fun. IMO obviously.

I honestly don't know. I personally love turn-based RPGs.
