Fanboy’s will soon overrun this thread but here are my thoughts:

Gears of War in my mind has been the game that has defined next gen so far.  Fantastic game play, graphics and mechanics have allowed the game to be the second highest seller for this generation.  More so, it introduced a new element to online gaming for consoles that had been overridden with first person shooters. 

There is a distinct advantage over MGS4 and that is proven next gen game play.  Gears has a proven methodology to its game play where as MGS, although a mature franchise, is making its first stab to this generation.  Everyone knows what they will be getting from Gears whereas MGS4 is a little bit of a crap shoot.  There is no doubt that MGS4 will be great but no one knows how great until they have picked up a controller and played it firsthand.  (Trailers look fantastic)

In the realm of game longevity I think Gears will be at the forefront simply because of online.  There is a reason that it is still among the top games on Xbox Live. 

Metal Gear has become a household name.  I think it is undeniable that this game will push the PS3 to new levels of success and so should it.  I have been eagerly awaiting to see what Solid Snake will get into next but have a couple of issues with the MGS series.  Based on the last 3 MGS game releases one thing has occurred to me and that is there is a very small replay value.  For me I tend to beat games and never touch them again unless there is a reason to.  For me it’s like watching a movie you have already seen and although you may watch it again, that is usually within a long period of time. 

The way I look at this is MGS4 will have the better campaign play if Gears 1 is any indication of what Gears 2 will be like.  I will give the nod to Gears for online play and longevity seeing that I was and still am addicted to the first one. 

My conclusion:

Let the brawl begin

What's better: Portal or Super Mario Galaxy?

Hmm, they are two very different games despite a few similarities. MGS 4 will probably revolve around stealthy and more slowly paced gameplay and a less direct approach to things, whereas Gears 2 is sure to be very hands on and in your face (in a good way).
In my mind there's no conclusion to be drawn here, the two games have very different objectives, its like Need for Speed and Gran Turismo who also share core elements but are built and managed very differently.

Gears of War 2 will be, well, epic. MGS 4 perhaps even more so in my mind, but they're bound to appeal to relatively different audiences which will hold one preference before the other in this context.
I'd buy both games on launch, but I don't think everyone else would.

Yeah they're too different :x In terms of actual content for value though I'm going to put money on MGS4. It's obviously going to have an insanely long single player with plenty of cinematic glory, and I've heard it's shipping with Metal Gear Online, which got a decent amount of praise on the PS2 version.

Then again I do have that bad taste in my mouth about the length of Gears of War and the lack of actual weaponry or story... so my opinion is slightly skewed :x

Fenix would pound Snakes butt all over the place... no question at all... Snake is an old man and he never fought aliens... he doesn´t even have a chainsaw on his gun... your to old for this shit old man...

Gears is in 3rd place now , and thats without all the Wii 5 million + sellers ...

Still , I liked GoW a lot , but IMO the chances for a better game are on MGS4s side . The game was in development for a good ammount of time , and lets be honest , MGS games dont tend to dissapoint at all ...

@El Dude, no chance in hell dude! Snake will simply place a magazine with some scantily clad women on the floor, Fenix (the dumbass that he is) will obviously pick it up to read, and then boom, broken neck and getting dry humped by snake for his remaining ammo and rations.

@ Chrono, actually I figure Snake would just wait until Fenix goes to sleep and then slit his throat. The great part about being an espionagey (yes I made that up) type of person is that you aren't forced to play fairly.

@OT, I'll have to agree with everyone else, as far as quality goes they are really too different to tell, unless one just unexpectedly sucks.

 sanke dint fight eliens but he thought like 22 metalgears, syber ninjas, phyciks, vampires and soon to be weird tenticle thingys... where is Fenix on that :P
