That's innacurate. There were action RPG's even as far back as the SNES. Secret of Mana, Tales of Phantasia, Terranigama etc. And there are still rpgs with turn based systems today, like the Final Fantasy XIII series. It's mainly been a design choice since SNES. And different people prefer different systems, that's why it hasn't gone away. |
And in the same way that Tabletops are still a thing, so are turn by turn. It's become a genre through technological inability, and there are people who prefer it for one reason or another. The fact remains that this genre arose through an inability to do anything else, and I'm glad to see VII:R depart from the archaic game style.
Don't get me wrong: I like turn by turn games. The only PS1 game that I can play through start to finish every time is a turn by turn, and not even an ATB like Final Fantasy (Legend of Legaia rocks my socks and yours, too). But if that game was REMADE- not ported- I would want it to play like a more modern game. If VII:R had a turn based battle system I wouldn't waste my time or money on it.

Hmm, well... It's a different way to play. It gives me more of a reason to play the original, since this one will be very different.

I like FF7, think it is a great game. A big part of why I like it is due to its atmosphere. I do not find the remake to have the same type of feeling/atmosphere, based on what I have seen so far. Also, I HATE how Cloud looks now and has looked in his most recent appearances. His profile/menu pic in the original version of FF7 is so well done and beautiful, yet now he looks way too angsty and girly. I will gladly stick with the steam/PS4 re-release versions and skip this one. I need to see more of the battle system but I would have preferred the classic ATB turn-based one. Too bad most developers are unwilling to make classic turn-based RPGs now a days
Hi
would've preferred the ATB combat system, the combat in the video left me bummed out.
I like when there is a mix between the two.
I feel like the right way to do it is like in Xenoblades.
You auto attack, and position yourself accordingly to skills, and then use and wait on semi long cooldowns.
Its a active combatsystem, and yet feels almost turn based.
The combat from that video did not look good imo.
Not gonna lie. This is swaying me into potentially trading my Xbox One for a PS4

Keeping it turn based would be classic, but this could work out well too..

I was expecting this type of gameplay since FFVII: Crisis Core but I still want to know more before making any judgement.

It looks fantastic. I would play it regardless oF action or turn based but I prefer action x10 more than turn based. Turn based, personally, feels very outdated in our modern gaming (I have no problem if it's a strategy RPG a la FFTACTICS or wasteland 2) I don't know where people get this that action combat has no strategy whatsoever. While some can be button mashers, there can be alot of depth to fighting in real time. You gotta mind your positioning, block, parries, counterattacks, etc. Not to mention you are pulling all of these while in the heat of battle, analysing the fight and enemy as you fight along. You can button mash the cannon Fodder, for sure, but so can be said for turn based where you just smash the attack button on all characters.
Regardless, there is a lot we still don't know so let's cool our jets. Combat isn't the only thing to FF7, the story, atmosphere, characters, all of that matters
