Forums - Nintendo - Motion controls is optional for Zelda TP... They should've did this with Skyward Sword

Disagree and this was argued a lot at ZeldaSS launch.

The controls are awesome and natural with the exception of the menus because they focused on motion vs IR pointer.

The attack difficulty would not be possible without the motion element. That was a very nice addition to the franchise.

You aren't a huge fan of Skyward Sword, eh?

Considering the amount of time he dedicates to it, I'd say he's a big fan.

Signature goes here!

The controls are responsive for many people, and aren't for other people, so the people who can't get them to work are clearly doing something wrong. But, whether or not people like the inclusion is a different thing. If you don't like to play the game with the motion controls, don't play the game.

Can't wait for The Zelder Scrolls 3: Breath of The Wild Hunt!

They could have assigned the sword swinging to the second analogue stick on the classic controller. So you move the the analogue stick in the direction you want to swing the sword and click the stick down to perform a forward stab. For the puzzles just use the analogue stick to twist the boss door item, simple.

If you ever played the game like that on Dolphin, it just doesn't work. Most people have to switch between different control settings for different parts of the game.

Obviously they need to do a little more effort than a simple hardware remap of the controls. Yet there is nothing in the game that can't easily be solved with a second analogue stick and/or a button press.

I gave up on the game since it reached 80% accuracy at most translating my motions to sword movements. It was anything from 1:1 mapping, it was mostly gesture based and often responded to the back swing instead of the actual swing. At least with the analog stick there is zero confusion what is a backswing and the actual strike. And a button press for forward stab would have solved a lot of aggravation as that registered less than half of the time.

Immersion would have been a lot better too if you have the second analog stick to control the camera while not in z-target mode. Having to go in first person mode to akwardly look up and down was annoying.

Some things did work better like aiming, and the bowling motions for bombs were fun. Yet the sword fighting was simply frustrating most of the time.

I'm more inclined to play a remaster of Skyward sword than TP. I never finished it first of all and I liked the design of it more than TP. TP was kinda boring with the annoying twilight realm. SS had other problems though, bring on the next zelda instead. Hopefully it will be able to match the last great one, WW, and reverse the decline of the series.

If the motion controls did not work then you were probably doing something wrong.

I had no trouble reaching platinum fights in Sports champions gladiator duels, that was actual 1:1 mapping. At some point you have to bring your arm back to make the next strike in SS. If you do it slightly too fast, the game picks that up as a gesture to strike the other way. Frustrating. You can see in that video how slowly he hast to move his arm back or up to prepare for a strike. It just wasn't fun, and far from actual 1:1 mapping.

It wasn't the only problem though, just aggrevated to the point of putting the game away. The fourth time fighting a boss that appeared twice before already, after a lengthy unskippable cut scence, multi phase battle, motion controls screwing up the last stage over and over. That was enough of that.

A few tip I'll give you

One, stand in front of the sensor bar. It's amazing how many people miss this one.

Two, you don't need to swing your arm, a simple flick of the wrist will suffice.

Three, down on the D-pad is your friend.

Yeah I did all that, I played the game for over 20 hours. Plenty of time to give it all the goodwill in the world. It just did not click with me.
The sand sea and time mechanic were awesome anyway despite the motion controls.
