Forums - Gaming - Sony getting away with paid online is the greatest current gen achievement so far.

Hardly. Try Amiibo. Nintendo has adults buying multiple toys, sometimes even duplicates that have been dipped in paint.

Well because of that, I haven't played my PS4 in about 3 weeks because I can't afford for online! Thanks, Sony.

Funny how the same people who complained about M$ putting online multiplayer and other features behind a paywall since day 1 with XBL have absolutely no issues with Sony now doing the same with PSN this generation because "free games"... even though you don't actually OWN the games, it's just a glorified rental system for as long as you have a PS+ subscription. Meanwhile, "Games With Gold" games on XBL actually are free to own even after you let your Gold subscription expire, so you don't have to purchase them outright like you do on PSN if you're not a subscriber, thereby negating any perceived advantage of PS+ over XBL.

Also, the other big criticism leveled at M$ and the X1 at the beginning of this generation was the whole DRM / "always online" fiasco, which of course Sony PR took full advantage of despite the fact that it never actually came to fruition on the X1 as it was originally intended. However... the "always online" thing has since reared its head in other ways in the fact that now certain games, such as one of the biggest titles released thus far this generation - Destiny, can only be played when an online connection is present, even if you only want to play single player modes.

Once again, the same folks who raged over M$'s proposed always online DRM had absolutely no issue with Bungie effectively doing the very same thing, and Destiny was one the biggest titles on PS4 over the past year and helped move a ton of consoles despite the fact that if you didn't have an online subscription you effectively just bought yourself a $60 coaster.

Why do I need to own the games if I can play them forever? Plenty of people are fine with getting to play a game forever for just $1. Rental or not, it's amazing value.

Also, are you sure it's the same people? I don't think it is.

The point is that with "free" games on PS+ the minute your subscription runs out they are no longer free and you need to either renew your subscription for $50/yr in order to play it for "free" or purchase the game outright to play it again, whereas with XBL any game that you've downloaded for free as part of Games With Gold is tied to your account and is yours forever even if you stop paying for a Gold membership.

Don't use the word free then. That won't take away the value. Upwards of $AU6,500 in games is what I got since I've subscribed to PS+ (Day 1 subscriber). Games with Gold only exists because PS+ exists and don't offer as many games and the big games come out much later than on PS+.

The other question is, why would you stop subscribing?

Well why would they know? Sony never advertised they're charging for online play.

People played PS3 online free for the entire generation. I believe many people bought a PS4 not knowing online play was no longer free.

Frankly, not everybody buying a PS4 is a forum dweller or reading gaming news.

That's what I meant by not in the know. Honestly, I don't even know how that's possible. Even if you don't read forums, or keep up with the industry, there are always friends and word of mouth. Back in the 80's, I knew all about NES related things by reading magazines and talking with other friends of mine who were into gaming. It just blows my mind that anyone outside of a mother or someone who isn't buying a console for themselves to not know they have to pay for online gaming.

With the services they offer, I'm surprised they didn't do it sooner. The streaming/share play thing is a big deal even if you guys don't use it and that takes up resources and computing power.

Hmm, pie.

Share play should only take processing power on your end. Sony is just checking whether you are allowed to share-play a game so they can block the feature for certain games.

For two generations people called MS greedy for paid online services. Taking that idea is now an achievement for Sony?

Also, you shouldn't call it an achievement. Since its Sony, it should be called a trophy.

I still call MS greedy! And I also call Sony greedy! Luckily I'm not that much into online games, so I just don't subscribe most of the time. Only here and there when there's a decent game in the package. I would never pay solely for playing online. That's just a rip-off. It's also the reason why I never buy a year in advance or stuff like that. You may say it's cheaper in the end, but I have no idea what games I will get in that time! Could be really good games, could also only be bullshit. So I decide from month to month when I actually know what I'm getting.

Oh, and for both Microsoft and Sony, I think they should change the way they charge for online play. There are dozens of time when I have like 2-3 weeks no time for playing games. If I subscribed a month in that time for playing online, I could only use it for a week! Why don't they give you a certain amount of time that will only decrease when you are actually playing online? That way I could just buy myself 10 hours and would be good for a whole year.

Not true for Xbox One games. You can play those also just while your Gold subscription is active.
