Forums - Nintendo - I am on the verge of buying a Wii U but...

If the current library is something you really want to try out, I'd say go for it. With how little is known about the NX currently, I wouldn't let it impact your purchase, and considering that it hasn't even been formally announced, it seems to me it's unlikely to even be released until end of next year. There's also the fact that backwards compatibility isn't guaranteed (though I personally hope it's there), so you might be waiting to play certain game(s) to no avail.

It also depends on what your disposable income looks like, and if $300 to be able to play the games you want a year early is worth it to you in terms of your gaming budget. I personally love the system. Even as someone who generally doesn't care for Mario games, I still have a crazy amount of great games to play. Works as a great media hub/remote too, but if you have other platforms, that's probably a non-issue.

Anyways, it really depends what you're looking for, how long you'd be willing to wait, and how much you're willing to pay. Good luck making a decision!

As a happy Wii U owner, I say...wait.

If the NX is backwards compatible (or just a whole lot better than the Wii U), you'll be able to get that. And even if it's not, once it comes out the Wii U is going to eventually be dirt cheap. Now seems like the worst time to buy one, in my opinion--things are too close to changing. Reggie himself said we would learn more about the NX at E3, which isn't too far off in the grand scheme of things.

I just bought my Wii U today. I personally dont think NX will be backward compatible with Wii U. Nintendo isn't going to go PPC next generation, and while there might be some games emulated most of the library will remain untouched. Plus it will take NX a few years to accumulate a decent library.

Yeah if you can wait until E3 i would say hold on to your purchase for now. Because they might actually tell us what the NX is or show more games for the Wii U and the 3DS.

Pocky Lover Boy!

Another thing to consider: will you want to have to play catch up on all the games on Wii U you want? Especially if you want XCX, WWHD, Genei Ibun Roku #FE, etc. Even if the NX is backwards compatible, the Wii U's successor, AND launches next year (three ifs, BTW), it's unlikely the launch lineup is going to be so stellar you couldn't wait several months to a year to let it flesh out :P . Honestly, the only massive game I see maybe being on it immediately is Zelda but they have all but personally emailed every Wii U owner a message saying YES Zelda will be on Wii U. So you will still get that and the NX version, I guarantee, will not be SO definitive as to make the Wii U version unacceptable. My advice is get the Wii U, get on the games you want on it, and you can be ready for NX when it launches, be that 2016 or 2017.

Starfox looks fun and Zelda has the potential to be amazing but ... seriously, if I bought a Wii U and then it turned out that the NX could play Wii U games, I'd feel like I wasted money better spent elsewhere. Especially if there ends up being a real Metroid game on the NX.

In a way, backward compatibility is probably a mistake in terms of a sales hook at launch as it makes you feel like you should wait, and wait, and wait. At least when you're talking about the short generations that Nintendo seems to favor.

I kind of wanted a Wii at the end because of the RPG hype but I decided it wasn't enough. I kind of wanted a Wii U at the beginning because it seemed like it was going to be well supported but that quickly faded and now I'm waiting to see what happens with Zelda. What I'm hoping is that Zelda, at least, ends up on the NX and the NX ends up being THE ONE--that is to say, a full generation of support, all the features of the other consoles, and a diverse array of quality titles.

NX will most likely have NO backwards compatibility with the Wii U. Nobody knows what games they might port though...

Just wait for E3 next year for more info on NX

Just a figment of Imagination by those who are desperate to have their favorite company redeem themselves with their next system which btw is unannounced.

In other words - its just something people talk about when they got nothin better to do.

Buy yourself a WiiU if you want it - there's a couple of great games - granted all of them are first party l0l.

LOL As Microsoft admitted Nintendo has some of the best first party if not the best first party in terms of overall quality. That Wii U might look well next to my PS4 and XBox One.

How the hell did you get a ps4 and Xbox one and not a wii u!?!? As a hardcore Nintendo fan run  i say run and buy it! It has the best games this gen. hands down. The gamepad is underrated and is one of the best controllers ever, off TV play is amazing. And it fits perfectly on the non vent top side of the Xbox one, it was like they were meant to be the console combo this gen. It looks good together.

I will likely buy a Wii u simply to play Bayonetta 2.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll use it for much else.
