Forums - Gaming - When Will the Frame Rate Standard Go Beyond 60fps?

I doubt it. My guess is graphical fidelity and resolution will take precedent over frame rate because it is easier quick sell to most consumers. If anything I could see 60 fps struggling to be standard, much less getting 120 fps anytime soon.*

*Outside of VR as other have touched on.

That will take quite some time, especially for mainstream markets. My über rig can push the most demanding games at around 70 fps +, it would take years and years for mainstream units to gain the required hardware power to offer stable 60fps gaming.
Doubly so if and when resolutions and effects increase again.

A long way off, in other words.

i think after 4k they will market refresh rates because they will run out of ideas selling you a new TV

No. That's what 200,000k is for :P.

I'm curious to see how 120fps looks like as I've only played at 60fps so far. I doubt it will be the standard next console generation. 4k will be the standard resolution when the next wave of Sony / Microsoft consoles release. Pushing 4x the number of pixels while simultaneously doubling the framerate would put some serious strain on the hardware, leaving too little extra power for added graphical fidelity.
My guess for next gen is 4k resolution at 60fps, with some game deviating from that standard.

Waste of resources to go beyound 60 fps imo.

All you need is a Freesync / G-sync like feature and 60 fps becomes so damn enjoyable you really wouldnt complainn at all about it not being higher.

Hey, a century ago the average frame rates were around 20 and now they're on 30, and even 60. Give another 100 years and we may yet have movies around 72 and other displays on 120...

It's a rather pointless question, I'm sorry to say, because nothing over 60 fps is even remotely warranted. Most games are 30 fps for that matter, and look just fine. Only certain types of games, such as racers etc., NEED to be in 60 fps to really look smooth.

Probably yes since graphics themselves have plateau'd while machines are getting more powerful.

No, they haven't. Besides that, devs will use the greater power for more geometry, A.I., physics, A.A., etc...

Yes, they have. Otherwise, your 3-year video card wouldn't have been able to keep up.

Let's first get consoles which can run games at 4K @ 60 fps.

when people actually start to care. yes, i know, there are a lot of gamers who want 60 fps, but from what ive seen, my friends who casually pick up new games every few months do not even know what you are talking about when you mention framerates
