Sony PlayStation 4 Can Benefit More From Backwards Compatibility Than Microsoft Xbox One

The PS4 could offer a lot more with backwards compatibility considering its back catalog of PlayStation console games go back 20 years

It is clear that Microsoft Xbox One will benefit enormously from backwards compatibility. However, Sony PlayStation 4 may benefit even more from backwards compatibility. It’s pretty clear that Sony’s PlayStation consoles together have two decades of games across three different platforms. We go back to 1994/95 when the first PlayStation launched all over the world and there are so many classics from that era that would be simply amazing to play on the PS4. Crash Bandicoot, Tekken, Metal Gear Solid and WWE Smackdown were some of the best games of the time.

 

If we go to the PS2 era, we find an even better library of games that spawned a good decade. You look at games like WWE Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and MGS 3: Snake Eater, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, God of War, Devil May Cry and more. The list keeps getting better when you add the PS3 games in the mix. What we mean to say is that by offering backwards compatibility even with software emulation, it is possible for so many of us to give our old console game discs a new life, since they have been gathering dust on our shelves. The PS2 is now around 15 years or so old and the PS3 is nearing a decade itself. One system to play all the games would be the best gift Sony can give to loyal PS4 owners. It just makes more sense now since Xbox One offers backwards compatibility to 104 Xbox 360 games initially, with more to be added soon.

 

This does not mean that Sony takes the focus from new releases but at least you give your loyal fans a chance to relive their best gaming moments on games they own. Hopefully, we may just get backwards compatibility on the PS4, but we won’t hold our breath.

Anyone that actually still physically owns PS1/2/3 games more than likely still have a PS1/2/3.



There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'

They'll bring ps2 and Ps1 late in the gen, but why bring cheap old software when they're making mega bucks on new ones and covering costs and selling hardware.
BC is brought when sony needs it because of slowing sales or software deficiencies, and there isn't much of that going round. XB1 is hardly doing good outside of America, and even in America it's not doing as good as it could've done, so they need their 'down the road' ammunition now

Fortunately there is a solution for people that want to play old Playstation games. It's called PS Now and it requires online connectivity.

I understand why PS4 doesn't have BC for PS3. But its a shame they haven't bothered to port their PS1 and PS2 emulators to PS4.

Well I think there are people that would like to play old games, but don't want to buy an old console and accessories to do it.

I know people who were PS3 fans and switched to Xbox One (yes, it does happen). They now have the ability to play notable 360 games without needing a 360. A friend of mine was saying she's interested in Fable but didn't have a 360. Well now she can play Fable II on her X1.

yeah but they look pretty bad on mordern TVs, some mordern TVs even dont support composite anymore, games are region locked and i would much rather have some classic games than indies all the time with my PS+ subscribtion. People who dont own any old games can just go out and buy PS2 and PS1 games or download them from the store.

Its about the grand sheme of things, PCs steam librabry is growning expontentionally every year because of BC. No one says its meaningless having access to older games on PC?

Oh Sony fans, always concerned about profits. God forbid they do BC simply because fans want it.

I'm currently happy with PS1 games on Vita, on the smaller screen, the small resolution doesn't pop out so much. And the screen itself is magnificent.

I read a while back that, if they do BC for PS1/2 games, it won't support discs, probably from potentially losing PS store/PS Plus profits from people who still has them. Can't remember who said it, will try to dig it up if anyone's interested.

Its pretty much confirmed that we will get ps1 and ps2 digital games. Actual discs depends on if sony can get through the licensing issues that come with zero control over what gets played.

 

Thats the xb1's issue with bc afterall.
