Forums - PC - Apple Achieves 14% Share of US Retail PC Market

Well I'm definitely not advocating it as I do own apple hardware after-all. The fact that you can run windows on a mac kinda proves apple is more hardware based then software. And thats why you won't see an official OSX version for normal x86 computers.

also as of last year, apple is the single largest supplier of laptops for the collegiate market.

I remeber a day when a man at dell said the best thing apple could do is close the company and give the money back to share holders

which company is worth more now?

Wow! Nice job Apple.

I'm still a Windows user though and that won't change anytime soon.

Yawn! .....This means PC's still sold 86% of computers. PC FTW!!! I've never had a mac.

I'm back...

Wow ... this is a pretty big deal ... now all they have to do is start gaining some more ground in other teritories to ...

Thanks Mafoo and loadedstatement... Can you tell me the specs on your Macs??

Out of my 4 desk top PCs none of them were bought retail. PCs can be custom built and its a large portion of the market. Only my notebook computer was bought retail.

I doubt that the percentage of people custom building their own computers is very high among the general population. Most people don't know the first thing about computers and would have no chance at being able to put one together. Then there are the people who know enough to do it but don't feel like it(me).
I just bought a macbook pro and I love it.

@ mafoo.. Gotta call you out on that so I checked out the Dell site, customized some models to try to get similar specs as their Apple counterparts. All prices are in Canadian.

Apple White 13" Macbook for 1150$
Dell Vostro 15" for 1190$ but with a faster CPU/more RAM and a Geforce 8400gs.
Not bad I guess but it's not exactly competitive.

Now we got the Macbook Pro for 2100$ against the XPS M1530.
Dell clobbers it with a bigger HDD, more ram for 1500$.

iMac 2.0ghz Core 2 duo for 1300$
Dell Inspiron 530 with a quad core proc., 2 gigs more RAM, better video card, bigger HDD for 980$.

I'm not even going to check out the high end laptops/desktops or LCDs. Just glancing over the specs/price makes my mind boggle. I understand spending a hundred or two extra to have the OS or the looks of Apple but when it gets to 500$-1000$, it's ridiculous. Also keep in mind that I checked out the Dell site only, if you look around for laptops/LCDs or build your own desktop, you can shave off even more $.

@rugger.. I agree with what you say about people not knowing how to build a computer but it doesn't cost that much to get someone to do it for you. 15$-20$ is the usual price around here(Toronto) and it's usually free if you buy the majority of parts from a shop.

does mac support most download-game(or movie) services? like gamefly, or steam?

if they don't and they win the computer war(lol) then there won't be any pc games?

EDIT: I just started thinking again, if they were successful, then developers would support them, NVM.
