That's great! You should let him know how proud you are if him because of that. I'm not a parent, but I still think encouraging children is extreamly important. Good luck with everything!

Thanks everybody for the solid advice so far and for the poll votes! (And for a few laughs, too!)
I just ordered the game on amazon. With prime shipping I should have it tomorrow.
I'll try to keep this thread updated. Everybody feel free to share more advice, stories about your kids playing Splatoon etc. I'm very interested.

I'd say Splatoon is good fun for someone around that age.
I don't think you'll regret your purchase at all.
"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."
As has already been suggested, and I second, Turf War would be a good starting point for online as it tends to be a little more relaxed and isn't ranked.
Even if he feels the need to stop and paint his name on the wall, I don't think anyone will care.
Start in one player (which you can do together) though to get familiar with the mechanics.
My 4 and 6 year old enjoyed it a lot. The 6 year old plays, 4 year old watches. The younger one doesn't want to play alone and they don't like the 2 player mode. They do fine in co-op in PvZ GW, but competitive against each other is a no go. It's hard enough to get them to play MK8 together as predictably the older one always has the advantage.
That said, they were playing it almost daily for a month, yet haven't touched it since. I guess it got old. Did he play lego city undercover yet? That game has a ridiculous amount of play hours in our house. That never gets old and they keep going back to it despite having 4 newer lego games since.
While the older one was still playing Splatoon he never really cared about winning or losing. It was enough fun to paint with the different weapons and score hits. There is no communication in the game and I never saw any team work arise. I don't think he ever played any ranked battles. He went back to PvZ GW as he does like to unlock more weapons. Splatoon was a bit limited in that I guess.

You just purchased it digitally, or it is day over there in Japan and you just walked to the local Famitsu store? |
Ordered it on amazon.
It's day here, by the way. Right now 3:40pm.
Most game shops here are open until 9 or 10pm, some others until 2-3am (mostly stores like Tsutaya or GEO that have rental video sections).

Thanks for your story. You always seem very knowledgable and level-headed, so I trust your opinion a lot.
He played (still plays) Lego City Undercover a lot. I did, too. In fact, it's the first game in over a decade that I've bothered to 100%. We've clocked over 100 hours and are still playing it from time to time.
