As has already been suggested, and I second, Turf War would be a good starting point for online as it tends to be a little more relaxed and isn't ranked.
Even if he feels the need to stop and paint his name on the wall, I don't think anyone will care.
Start in one player (which you can do together) though to get familiar with the mechanics.
