Forums - Nintendo - Splatoon has sold more than Mario Kart 8 WORLWIDE ( not Japan ) in the second quarter of sales.

 Anyway, I'm very pleased at how well Splatoon is doing. Here's hoping they are working on something more within the franchise - I do think that there's potential for more games within the Squid world (does it have an official name?). A full game that's based around the concept of the single-player mode of Splatoon would be great (just expand it into a full adventure rather than just a few isolated levels).

Splatoon has soooooooo much potential, the biggest thing I'm looking forward to is when they'll make vertical battles where you jump from a wall to the other and giving you the possibility to ink this walls on both sides...

they could also do stuff like:

weapons that flush away ink;

normal Shooter modes like kill=point (even if I'd like them to keep it as a shooter where to kill isn't your main objective ) ;

more than 2 teams battles;

singleplayer features in the online battles like the invisible walls;

that's just to name a few that came to my mind right now...

How can you say Splatoon has better legs when MK8 is only barely losing despite being out a year longer? That's ridiculous. Wait a year until you can actually analyze them long term, especially with a game boasting as unique a strategy as Splatoon. I'm more curious to see how it sold after August, once the meat of the game was out. If it slows down after that point, it just sold more for longer because it had a six month long launch.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

I feel like Splatoon is one of the most recent turnaround success games in a while.

Like, based on some of the comments being made on here and other places some people thought this would completely bomb. As someone else said, some people were already comparing it to Wonderful 101 sales right when it was first announced.

Makes me glad those people got proven wrong.

A grand total of one user said he expected it to perform like Wonderful 101. I mean, sure, Splatoon has overperformed (nearly) everyones expectations, but I'm getting kinda tired of people acting like a lot of users predicted that it'd do like Wonderful 101, or that that was the general conseus or whatever, because like I said, only one user on this forum said so....

I'm pretty sure some Gaf users had the W101 expectation too... Either way, it's impressive how hard Splatoon served crow. Besides Tbone (or was he being safe too?), no one expected over 2 million by the end of the year. Even 1 million was argued to not be possible.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

The problem is not more this. The problem is when Ryng Tolu or TBone made a REALISTIC Splatoon prediction ( or better, a conservate, because At the it sell Always better than what we say. ALWAYS ) and people call us crazy.

And since YOU asked me this bet, then... You Know... I'm sure you finally get it, and you Know Splatoon Will sell over 5 million.

I'm also SO generus to don't controll you're avatar... Well, that is.

you can't stop the RED RING.

I think you've missed that the comparison is Splatoon in the last three months vs MK8 in 2014 (equivalent three months). It's not comparing the sales numbers for 2015, it's comparing the numbers for "the July-September quarter immediately after launch" for each of the two games.

MK8 had a stronger launch period. But Splatoon is selling more strongly in the longer term. If there's an issue, it's not due to the comparisons being unequal, but due to the circumstances being unequal - Splatoon has launched to a larger install base, and has sold to a smaller number within that install base, prior to the quarter in question.

But really, the key point of the discussion is that Splatoon is at the very least keeping up with MK8, and that's pretty damn respectable for a new IP. Not many IPs could keep up with Mario Kart - we're talking about a franchise that, even at its worst, sold nearly 6 million copies (Super Circuit for GBA), and that has broken 36 million once, and two other times breaking 23 million and 11 million. Note that MK8 is on track to easily beat both Super Circuit and Double Dash (almost 7 million). Splatoon is doing pretty damn well if it's keeping up in terms of sales rate.

Whoops. I did misread, my bad. Ignore the majority of my post. I still do stand by my comment about post-August sales, though. I'm genuinely very curious whether the game will keep up this push in the face of what will likely be a much less focused DLC cycle. The game's legs were temporarily increased, but we don't have a clue whether that increase is because of a successful staggered launch or because the game genuinely has this massive selling power (relative to the Wii U of course).

I'll admit I was one of the people who thought it would be lucky to sell more than 1 million. It's at 2.42 million now. My prediction is that it is NOT going to reach 4 million, even with bundles (since the Wii U isn't selling much either). I am fully expecting the NX to come out within 12 months, and I don't think expecting Splatoon to sell another 1.6 million units is realistic in this time frame (that's an average of 130k units/month).

The game is still selling 70k+ per week and we still have holidays to come. I think it will manage to hit 4m with no problems.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Splatoon 2 should launch with their next console.
