Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Once Zelda goes open world, will it ever go back? *EDITED*

And only ranks as the greatest game ever created. ;)

But it's not. Like barely in the top 50, and that's only because of how important of a 3D game it was.

Not really the games I was referring to - I don't agree all of those games are boring, though, it's true that most of them are but a shadow of either their predecessors (Skyrim being probably the worst offender) or games they are copying.

Few of us around here who played Gothic 1/2 and who are fans of Pirhana Bytes know what I'm talking about, but, honestly, one really needs to have played those games to understand that balance between open world and narrative has already been done properly in fully 3D worlds - just not in mainstream RPGs, I suppose.

Anyway, wasn't really talking about copy/pasting designs of any particular game, more about taking some pointers in some aspects - though, IMO, they would have to go some 10-15 years back, when Western devs were making RPGs primarily for RPG fans, not for mainstream audience.

But, eventually, I'm hoping they'll surprise us all with someting new and fresh.

I haven't played those so I can't comment, but I doubt he's played anything but the most mainstream open worlds. He's played Skyrim. Zelda isn't an RPG, so it shouldn't be taking open world tips from those either.

Yeah, they removed way too much of both - while I can, sort of, understand their logic behind "hardware problem" with N64, from GC onward that was really not the case, so it must've been preference.

Honestly, I hope they take a few pointers from some of western devs, specifically few Euro-RPG devs, who managed to strike quite good balance between open-worlds and narrative structures in the past.

After OOT, the Aonuma took over the LoZ team. It's obvious which path they were going to follow given fan and critic reception to OOT. Hardware had nothing to do with it.

Of course it didn't have anything to do with hardware, that's why I said on several ocassions that I don't buy into Miyamoto's "hardware limitations" excuse - maybe that can pass for N64 (though, at the time, PC had open world 3D RPGs), but certainly not for GC and Wii.

It's to the point where people purposely hate it because of its popularity, even people who don't play LoZ are tired of it ranking as one of the greatest games of all time. Aside from arguably Final Fantasy VII, no game has had that problem.

I love OoT. Still don't think it's even close to being the greatest game of all time. There are far better games in its own franchise. I'd argue that Zelda is one of the most important games of all time to the grave, but it's definitely not as high as people say. Not even close.

Plus, it is the best selling Zelda game of all-time at 7.60 million (just N64 version).
Although Twilight Princess Wii is getting up there, and that game is essentially Ocarina of Time 2.

Me neither. Not to any great extent at least. Besides, why are we listening to Miyamoto explain anything about games he probably done little more than give insight to. Aonuma was director after OOT.

Sales, rankings and general opinion would all disagree, but you are entitled to your opinion.

With OOT, and OOT 3D it has reclaimed best selling title overall. With Twilight Princess Wii and GC falling to second place. But yeah, you're pretty much dead on sales wise.

Yeah, bad choice really, if he wanted to see what TES is all about he should've played Morrowind, but at the same time answer to why I'm talking about RPGs when it comes to Zelda - sure, technically, Zelda is not RPG, but I'm having a hunch that they will try to incorporate some aspects of open-world WRPGs in new Zelda.

Honestly, playing games from other devs and taking some good stuff is not such a bad idea - for example, most people maybe don't know it, but Ultima and Wizardry, both cRPGs, had quite an influence on japanese RPG devs in those early days, just like Zelda influenced lot of western devs.
