one key thing that separates the PS2 and wii is 3rd party support.

Another key thing that separates the PS2 and Wii is Nintendo support.

PS2 was the platform to develop on, the Wii is the LAST choice for developers. Take a look at the 1up games of 2008 topic. The Wii games are a joke for this year. The PS2 always had the best hardcore games and a lot of casual games. The only thing the Wii has in common with PS2 is that it is cheap, last gen technology and has a massive amount of casual games. It will never be a choice for hardcore games with the 360 and PS3 in the market.

Is this post serious. If so ................ I can't help , but say you fail. I really don't want to get into it , because judging by this post you seem to ignorant to believe any response I give you.

Actually; I think the PS2 was the most expensive console, I remember some pretty sweet deals on X-box and Gamecube here and they both cost significantly less all the time from launch till their death.
Also; The Wii is not the cheapest any more, the 360 now costs less in most of the world outside of NA, at least the cheaper versions which, let's face it, are mostly the same only with a smaller HDD.
The Wii launch price was very low for its time, but the deal looks less than sweet as it stands now with the 360 costing less and the PS3 not too much more.
I think Nintendo may have to cut the price once this year to keep the deal good enough, it'll look silly costing more than its speced out HD rivals imo.
199$ and the game is on again this fall...

But that's more things in common with PS2, everyone was on board with DC, that was released earlier and all the real games were put on GC. 3rd parties turned to PS2 because they had to, since it was the only way to make money. Their last choice. Look at the PS2 launch lineup, if you call it serious 3rd party support, you must be out of your mind. Neither were PS2 the choice of hardcore, when GC and XBox were on the market. But it didn't help them. The only difference in your post is, that PS2 wasn't cheap in comparision. @Rock on: Did you know that Wii is the first Nintendo console without "Nintendo" in its name?

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Are you referring to the XBox 360 Arcade model vs the Wii? The Arcade model lacks a Hard Drive and wireless controller, considered "must have" features.

Or has the Premium model gone down in price enough to catch up to the Wii? If it has, it will be interesting to see if Nintendo responds.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

While the PS2 was my primary platform last gen (no questions asked, since I'm still trying to get certain games for it) but the PS3 and 360 aren't really offering me much value, especially for their costs.

Xiru, I can't argue that I would prefer more games I enjoy on the Wii (from 3rd parties), but at the same time, why would I invest in a platform that offers me even fewer games that I enjoy?

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

No the arcade has a wireless controller. The only thing it doesn't have is a hdd. It has a memory card instead. Even so it's not a good deal to buy a 360 without a hdd.

I thought the arcade does have a wireless controller. Only the old "Core" didn't. AFAIK the only difference with the Arcade is no HD, it just comes with a memory card.

Lets see both Nintendo Wii and the PS2 share quite a few things in common.

1. The PS2 was last generation's shovelware machine it had a lot of good games on it but there was also a lot of crap games on that system. The Nintendo Wii is the shovelware console of this generation and has a lot of good games already but it has had a lot of crap games.

2. The PS2 sold over 120 million consoles in its life time so far in 7 years. The Nintendo Wii is expected to reach 120 million years in 5 to 6 years time.

3. PS2 was the market leading console of its generation smashing its competition in sales and appealing to all gamers both hardcore (minority) and the casuals (majority). The Nintendo Wii is the market leader of the current generation and its smashing its rivals, Wii is popular with all gamers both casuals and hardcore.

4. Both PS2 and Nintendo Wii have the inferior consoles of their generation in regards to graphics , memory and storage capacity, where its rivals had superior consoles.

5. Both Nintendo Wii and PS2 are the cheapest consoles of their generation.

@ your post:

#1: ps2 really wasn't as much of a shovelware console until 2006 (when the ps3 hit shelves). there were some games, yes, but not nearly as many as people make it out to be. (note: there were plenty of sub-par games on the ps2. but there is a difference between a sub-par game coming from a notable developer, ie: 'devil may cry 2', and 'ninja bread man.')

#2: true

#3: the ps2 had way more hardcore games early on and way more gamers who bought the system for hardcore games.

#4: the distance (in terms of power and all that) from the wii to ps3/360 is a lot larger then the distance from the ps2-xobx. also, ps2 was weaker because it came out a year before those systems, wii was made on the cheap (relatively speaking) by choice. ps2 was also more powerful then the dreamcast.

#5: ps2 was not the cheapest. in fact, it launched at $300, just like the xbox. the gamecube and dreamcast both launced at $200.

i (and ive said this before) think the wii has a lot more in common with the ps1 then ps2.

ps2 lived off 3rd party support / wii lives off 1st party support

ps2 had a ton of (high quality) exclusive third party titles / wii to date has few

ps2 had far more games rated mature/teen

ps2 was not geared towards casuals

ps2 was not a system that specifically encouraged thinking outside the box in terms of game development

ps2 could play movies

wii is much more like the ps1 in that:

both marked a change in the direction of gaming

both surprised everyone with how they took the gaming market by storm

both released a lot of haphazard titles early on

both saw developers struggling to make quality titles for it early on

since it was so cheap to develop for, the ps1 had wayyyyyy more shovelware then ps2
