Dr.Henry_Killinger said: Bullshit... Pachter, aside this is PR crap. Sony has a vested interest, of course they are going to say console gaming is alive and well, while simultaneously getting in to VR, PS Now, and Remote play. They know its a sinking ship. Like smartphones are to handhelds, PC is to console, and it is inevitable.

It's a sinking ship that they're repairing.
Smartphones to Handhelds =/= PCs to Consoles.
If anything, PCs have lost momentum first from Laptops, then from tablets, and now from smartphones. A sub section of PC sales may go to the hardcore and that might be growing but how it's correlating to the console space is not directly clear yet. Console gaming has seen growth and this might be the first gen we see an anomaly, but they certainlymaintain a separate identity from the PC space - look at the growing popularity of smart TV boxes which all offer features that you can also find on consoles. The way things are trending reveals a few things:
- Cable is beginning to dwindle. A la carte Services like Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime are inclining and these kinds of services will eventually dominate the market. Sony will be the first on market to offer PS Vue, a service like we have never seen. This is a potentially huge factor.
- Almost everything you can do on a PC can now be done on a smartphone. There is less and less reason to buy into PC, not the other way around.
- As far as I'm aware, thanks in part to the innovations we've seen in HD technology, the vast majority still prefer to watch content on Televisions.
And a few other things of note. I think in the future we're going to see a much more casual audience adopting consoles like the PS4 as a all-in-one centerpiece platform for their home theaters - This can come full circle by the proper price point. Set top boxes will become obsolete;
PC's hardcore userbase might slowly grow but not enough to counter the amount of people adopting super smart TV boxes like PS4 and X1.
As cloud computing catches on, the days of overpowered PCs necessary to run high end gaming will come to an end in the wealtheir countries. The majority of our tasks will be server side, the writing's on the wall.
That's why it's critical that if Sony wants growth in it's "gaming" division, they are positioning themselves to offer services non/gaming related. That's why they created the cable killer. They do NOT foresee this market dwindling, in fact I think they see it's massive potential and I wouldn't be surprised if they're in an all or nothing mindset to dominate these similar yet unique markets.
