You don't have to be a scientist but perhaps a scientist would be clever enough to realize that only 20% or so of the wii users are traditional console gamers. I believe that traditional gaming will grow this gen again and may continue to do so in future generations.

Thats nice and all if somewhat useless.

Stating that the wii was an appererition and an anomoly is useless? On what planet is that not usefull information which needs to be factored in?

If he is going to include set top boxes like Apple tv as part of the reasoning as to why consoles will have dimished sales then how can you include the wii in console numbers?  Apple TV is just as much a console as the wii was.

idiots, do they never learn? just dont feed that stupid troll and he will go away someday--

Bullshit...
Pachter, aside this is PR crap.
Sony has a vested interest, of course they are going to say console gaming is alive and well, while simultaneously getting in to VR, PS Now, and Remote play. They know its a sinking ship.
Like smartphones are to handhelds, PC is to console, and it is inevitable.

People change their predictions every time..... Not so long ago maybe less than a year their were some that expected that Wii U could beat Xbox one. A lot in this forum also expected that mobile gaming will hardly damage handhelds. And I agree the number of Xbox one in his prediction is high I still find it hard to fight it because he use the logic 'Oh Xbox one sold more in the same time as Xbox 360 so Xbox one will sell more'

Its different that someone predicts (for example) that XY console will sell 50 million and then change his prediction to 60.

But saying that consoles are doomed and will be no more, and then changing his prediction to 120m Ps4s, 110m X1 and 20m Wii Us is just silly.

It's a sinking ship that they're repairing.

Smartphones to Handhelds =/= PCs to Consoles.

If anything, PCs have lost momentum first from Laptops, then from tablets, and now from smartphones.  A sub section of PC sales may go to the hardcore and that might be growing but how it's correlating to the console space is not directly clear yet.  Console gaming has seen growth and this might be the first gen we see an anomaly, but they certainlymaintain a separate identity from the PC space - look at the growing popularity of smart TV boxes which all offer features that you can also find on consoles.  The way things are trending reveals a few things:

- Cable is beginning to dwindle.  A la carte Services like Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime are inclining and these kinds of services will eventually dominate the market. Sony will be the first on market to offer PS Vue, a service like we have never seen. This is a potentially huge factor.

- Almost everything you can do on a PC can now be done on a smartphone. There is less and less reason to buy into PC, not the other way around.

- As far as I'm aware, thanks in part to the innovations we've seen in HD technology, the vast majority still prefer to watch content on Televisions.

And a few other things of note.  I think in the future we're going to see a much more casual audience adopting consoles like the PS4 as a all-in-one centerpiece platform for their home theaters - This can come full circle by the proper price point.  Set top boxes will become obsolete;

PC's hardcore userbase might slowly grow but not enough to counter the amount of people adopting super smart TV boxes like PS4 and X1.

As cloud computing catches on, the days of overpowered PCs necessary to run high end gaming will come to an end in the wealtheir countries.  The majority of our tasks will be server side, the writing's on the wall.

That's why it's critical that if Sony wants growth in it's "gaming" division, they are positioning themselves to offer services non/gaming related. That's why they created the cable killer. They do NOT foresee this market dwindling, in fact I think they see it's massive potential and I wouldn't be surprised if they're in an all or nothing mindset to dominate these similar yet unique markets.

Holy shit...I think you just shifted my paradigm on consoles. I've been convinced that the idea of physical console was concluding, but I completely disregard the effect of mobile market on PCs. With regard to gaming, it will always keep PC from being mainstream, and if that doesn't happen then home consoles are safe.

This is one case when Pachter is right. The dedicated console market will shrink but we will instead see the emergence of new ways to play through things like PSHome where the physical console becomes secondary.

Patcher is an idiot BUT... I also agree with you and with him. It´s clear that this market will go though some changing and I see the dedicated console market dwarfing year after year.

Also, hasn't Sony already agreed with Pachter? When they were asked about the Vita, even they acknowledged that it will be hard for it to compete when we have tablets and smartphones. The same goes for home consoles, only the transition will be longer. I personally look forward to the day my surface tablet functions as both a tablet and an Xbox :).
