Forums - Gaming Discussion - Phil Spencer hopes VR isn't the future of gaming.

Guys. I just realized why this is illuminati. Phil Spencer. What's his initials; that's right, PS. And he doesn't want VR to be the future. Phil Spencer Virtual Reality = PSVR. And how many letters are there in PSVR? Yeah, 4. What's 4-1? 3. Half-life 3 coming to Phil Spencer VR confirmed.

My cardboad kit is on the way! can't wait to try it out and decide for myself! (I may have to upgrade my phone now)...

However, he may be partially right, VR may be good for simpler, short, yet intense experiences or meditation like software... the common thing people who played around with it a lot seems to say is that they would not use these headsets for long periods of time, or that it's so different than a "regular" game that they do not see how it would integrate...

My opinion, with only about 5 minutes of use of an Oculus rift model 1 is that if you give me a regular controller and the head tracking is used to give me some partial control over the camera in a regular game I will LOVE it, imagine being INSIDE a car and being able to look around naturally while you drive, it look around in an FPS while walking(all other controls being adjusted to this).

I've had my cardboard for just over a week now. It's cool, but don't expect an Oculus level experience. One of my favorite things about it so far is having people who are totally out of the know when it comes to VR try it haha. My mom was blown away by Titans of Space haha.

I think if you're using it for a full game you should be able to use VR comfortably for a couple of hours.

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

I want to use HoloLens for gaming and porn. VR on the other hand is not really appealing to me so far. Phil is right about the social aspect of gaming, you can't deny it.

I never really got how you would use AR for gaming...I mean, the game world would be limited by the space you're physically in.

Forza Vista in your living room for example.
Get your RPG character standing next to you while you check your armor, weapons or whatever
Make the whole wall your screen
Use your coffee table as a board for a map editor or forge mode in Halo
Call tactics in madden / Fifa / NHL / NBA on a pitch in front of you

And that is just what came to my mind in the first 4 minutes.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

AR  for casual and familly games, VR in other hand for immersive experience and hardcore and mainstream games period.

Those are all interesting little tid-bits...but then what? How do you play that RPG with AR? Just on a fake, lower resolution screen? That's the same issue I had with the Minecraft demo, and that demo Magic Leap showed off. "Look! You can look at the Minecraft map in AR!", "Look! Robots are attacking you in your office!" They never talk about the next step.

This picture perfectly embodies my issue with AR gaming.

AR is looking at the hole in the wall, VR is walking through it.

They better hope it's not successful. It'd be like getting caught with your pants down when iphone and android enter the mobile os market and you were to busy writing it off as just a fad. Everything AR can do can be done in VR... VR can do things AR can't... AR has design restrictions VR will never have. How people can claim to be excited by AR (for gaming) and not VR blows my mind.

Don't get me wrong, I like looking at fish tanks from the outside (AR).  But I'd rather experience swimming in the tank, moving around, and exploring it from a different perspective (VR). I guess a lot of people are excited about looking at touch screen fish tanks (AR) that can be done in (VR).

So...it can replace mobile gaming for when you're on a train or something...

I don't know, that's just not interesting to me. So far everything we've been shown in AR is just little tiny mini-games. You can't world build in AR, you can't go to space in AR, you can't go to the bottom of the ocean in AR. It's just so limited in a gaming context compared to what VR can offer.

Let me get this straight...

Phil's recent rants:

  • Hates console wars (When losing, he didn't mind them during the X360 days)
  • Writes off VR (What does he have to lose if it fails?)
  • Lies by saying Sony moneyhatted FFXIV, when squares confirmed it's not on Xbox One because they won't allow cross compatibility with the PS4.
  • Makes random comment that he believes PS4 will have a price cut
  • Lies about the parity clause, says he doesn't think it's a thing anymore, all while it still exists.
  • Reconfirms why more Xbox games are going to PC all while saying it benefits Xbox users...

Can we just have a cohesive Phil said this thread? This is getting ridiculous. It's a lot easier to see him for the politician he is, when it's all in one space.

What i don't get is that at one of the biggest gaming shows of the year they showed that AR thingy with minecraft.... if they don't believe in wearable tech for gamers why even bother showing it at E3....

Seriously i cannot see how anyone can defend some of these statements at the moment.....
