What? A dev from Valve, which want you to buy steam games and which want you to play on steam os machines, says you should wait for Vulkan and not build the game on dx12? News at 11.

And if Vulkan is the best alternative, which no one seems to be arguing, it seems like it doesn't matter whether DX12 is best or not, devs are going to have to use Vulkan regardless if they go multiplat. Given Vulkan will also work with Win10 and with Win7/8 it seems like a no brainer for devs to prefer Vulkan because that gives them the maximum number of platforms on which they can release games. If Vulkan can deliver legacy and new PC+PS4 (and Linux for good measure) an a fairly dev friendly way then even if DX12 is a bit superior the force of numbers in favour of Vulkan could push DX12 to the margins. MS might quickly decide to update DX12 to work with Win7/8. Shutting out those older OS's might prove to be a mistake. Probably would have worked if Xb one didn't have just half (almost) of PS4's install base. If Win 10 and Xb one were major players then MS could have been pretty forceful with DX12, but they're not really in that position. |
100% agree

Steambox's were looking like the only really viable alternative. linux gaming is too fragmented with far too many issues, OS.X has too small a marketshare to be a primary target for devs and the other platforms don't have the power or support to currently challenge desktop gaming. really most devs are still targetting DX first, OpenGL just hasn't been able to keep up, only time will tell if this iteration will be different.
Vulkan will totally crush DX12. Just like OpenGL crushed Direct3D.
Oh wait...

Well, at least Vulkan tries to be better than the fuckup that OpenGL was. But still people should be warned, though.

I'm not getting Windows 10 either. Sticking with 7.

I still don't think it matters for the vast majority of people. Vulkan is supported by both GPU manufacturers and not long until Windows 10 will be what the majority of gamers uses. And Vulkan will also run on Windows 10.
In the end there won't be anyone who notices or cares. Except maybe Microsoft or Linux fanboys.

I personally look forward to how Vulkan wants to manage the variety of GPUs from desktop, mobile and consoles with which feature level and how much it puts the "hard work" to the drivers and what is up to the API itself which also has to support a variety of operating systems. So to say how "generic" Vulkan itself is or has or tries to be and where the necessary modifications have to take place.

You really should get your eyes checked if you still can't see the support for Windows 7, 8 and 10. That's much, much better than what DX12 offers. I can't find a single reason to move from my Win 7. If they allow me to keep getting the best effects on this system and have all games 100% compatible, I won't switch in years.
Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!
My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/
My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

So now PS4 is Win 7's the best friend? Yet another reason to be happy it dominates Xbone :)
