Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft's Downloading Windows 10 to PCs That Opted Out of Upgrade

This seems to be the day of scandelous news. Nintendo are next.

I would like to know what files from a possible W10 upgrade are automatically installed and for what purpose.

If we talk about purpose, the video says they are installed for a possible upgrade, I would like to know if they are indeed 100% useless if you don't upgrade and if they take space unnecessarily.

If previous OS versions are somehow modified with W10 files even if you don't upgrade, I would like to know what they change, if they change anything.

With answers to the questions above I could tell whether this is good or bad.

Glad I have automatic updates turned off. :)

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

Unless the automatic updates are fully disabled it's pushing all the Windows 10 files for the installation (up to 6GB) into an hidden directory:

http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/09/microsoft-is-downloading-windows-10-to-pcs-even-if-you-dont-reserve-a-copy/

After that it should prompt the users to proceed with the installation. Basically for people with a internet traffic cap those are 6GB of bandwidth thrown out of the window. Plus 6GB of disc space, sure.

My thoughts about this: MS isn't famous to give anything out for free. Now they are even trying to force Windows 10. Windows 10 has been defined "as a service". Services are much more profitable than licenses because they usually need a subscription. One must be blind for not seeing where MS is heading to. Just remember the XBL subscription needed to play P2P games (and use the console web browser).

Have you done all the Windows updates?

My 240gb system ssd doesn't like the sound of this. That's costly space.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Windows 10 is an amazing operating system. People should definitely upgrade. Nowadays my PC just works and I don't have to worry about stuff not responding or the system crashing like it did in Windows 7.

Of course allowing people to decide for themselves is great too .

I don't think you can technically opt out of the upgrade. I think you can only either opt in or not, and not opting in is not the same as opting out. Please correct me if I'm wrong though.

That said, downloading shouldn't be done automatically, especially in the days of small SSDs. I have Windows installed on a small SSD and having another Windows installation file just sitting there would me pretty bad. And then there's the people with download caps too.

There are tons of issues with Windows 10. And personally I haven't had a single crash on my Windows 7 PC since I got it (a year ago). Didn't have many crashes on my previous Windows 7 PC either. In fact, I don't remember a single one but there must have been some. Just saying it's not even nearly as black and white as you say it is.

It's a good thing I still use Windows XP. Too bad I can't play most modern games though.
