It's a mistake to frame an audience as a static chunk. They went different places. I was a devoted Sega fan in the early 90s. I then went to Playstation 1 & 2. Before going to Xbox in 7th gen. And now I'm almost entirely Nintendo. Some people are more predictable but plenty aren't.
I'm guessing that most of them stayed loyal to the brand and moved on to the GameCube, a sizable chunk moved to the PS2 and some moved over to the Xbox side.
It coincided with me going off to university, so I dropped games for several years until the Wii came along- needless to say my first purchases after Wii Sports were the N64 games on VC
Picked up an Xbox 360 second hand to play the HD remake of Perfect dark, and the rest is history. Batman, Assassins creed, GTA, now I have xbox 360, DS, Wii U and PS4
I got a secondhand N64 by the start of the 6th gen (yes, I know I got into the N64 way too late), but then got a PS2 a year later. I'd assume that more than half went to Gamecube and the rest got a PS2.
