Forums - Nintendo - Is Wii U the Dreamcast of the 2010's?

Since when has Wii U a strong cult status? Maybe with Nintendo gamers but nowhere else.

The Dreamcast didn't at the time either. It was all "why are you wasting your time on that!? Don't you know that PS2 is coming out soon and it will have toy story quality graphics, play DVDs and be able to launch nuclear weapons in Iraq!"

That said, I don't think the Wii U is going to be that well remembered in the future. It hasn't really got much in the way of ground breaking software. It's got some incredibly good entries to the usual Nintendo franchises, but nothing equivalent to Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, Metropolis Street Racer, Phantasy Star Online (for it's time) etc.

The wii U wont be remembered 5 years from now, let alone the 16 years that the Dreamcast has since it launched.

I LOVED the Dreamcast one of the best The best catalogs of games ever.

They stole their controller from the N64, besides the lame middle screen. The games? The Wii U has just as many great games and still has 2 more years of life. Probably will even double the dreamcasts sales.

"They stole their controller from the N64, besides the lame middle screen"

I dont see how is this relevant to the main thread.

"The games? The Wii U has just as many great games and still has 2 more years of life."

It depends wether Nintendo releases the NX soon or not. I reeeeeeally dont think that the Wii U will be supported for 2 more years...hell, there are almost no games planned for next year so i expect that it will be a game every 4 months kind of dry for the Wii U. By august of this year there have been like what? 3 or 4 retail games released, imagine next year.

"Probably will even double the dreamcasts sales."

So you are saying that the Wii U will sell 7 million more units? LOL that is just madness. The Wii U is stuck at 10.14m, luckily it would reach like 12 or 13 at the most when all is said and done.

Some of the comments in this thread are quite strange .

Both are overrated and considered by fans to have the best games ( No questions asked ).  So Yes

Send a Friend Request On PSN :P

They are similar because they both had shitty marketing. Which is also why they have similar performances.

You are so wrong. Consoles wont get forgotten next gen. Also  the wii us fanbase wont let it be forgotten in 16 years. With that said i also love the dreamcast.

The Dreamcast has no exclusives so no

I would say the WiiU looks more like the Saturn. After the breakout success of their predecessor (Genesis/Wii), their inner problems, odd design choices and the rise of their competition makes the system less appealing by comparaison. And with thay, only the first party stays in enough numbers to support the console. Also, both systems are more relevant in Japan than in the West.

Shenmue :p

On a serious note though, it had plenty at the time. It's just that they were naturally moved to other platforms as years have gone by due t demand. Doesn't take away from what the system offered in 1999/2000 though.

Or is the NES now rubbish because of Virtual Console?
