Forums - Sony Discussion - Is PlayStation Just As Iconic As Nintendo?

...What about gen 7?

You mean the generation where Nintendo had nothing but gimmicky games that got boring fast cashing in on the Wit's inherent fad status? The XB360 was in charge until Sony closed the gap. Which it did eventually do (just not in America).

7th gen was less lopsided. Xbox and PlayStation were pretty evenly matched. If a game wasn't on both consoles, the other console had an equivalent (or at least similar) exclusive. Wii was out of luck in terms of actual games and not just cash-ins. I only bought 5 games for my Wii in the end (Smash, FF Crystal Bearers, MHtri, No More Heroes, Madworld).

Sony NEVER close the gap, the 360 is still above PS3 in lifetime shipments.

No, it isn't. The association between PlayStation and PlayStation-exclusive content isn't anywhere close to the association between Nintendo and Nintendo-exclusive content. When the bestselling games on your system (Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto) are also widely regarded as Xbox games, then you really aren't that iconic.

and what content does Apple have? its not always about games but the brand itself.

For me, you better believe it. I chose Playstation as my main console since the PS2 and I haven't looked back since (i owned an NES and SNES before that) PlayStation is synonymous with king of consoles.

In Europe PS is way more popular, but the thing is, what games people thinks of when we talk about PS in europe? They think about Call of Duty, Fifa, Final Fantasy and Grand Thef Auto, they don´t think on Sony games, but when you talk about Nintendo everyone thinks on Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Smash Bros, Donkey Kong, etc, because their games are way more iconic.

That´s curious, to me it happens on the other way. My first console was a Ps when I was 7 years old, my second one was the ps2 whan I was 12 and then my third one was GC at 15 and I haven´t looked back since then, it completely changed my perception of viodeogames, I have no nostalgia for Nintendo I just think they are the best doing games.

Yup, especially in Europe, Playstation is often used instead of "gaming console". No matter what it is, many people call it playstation (especially the older ones, because to them Playstation is what they remember).

I think is more like ONLY in Europe, because in America ( the most important market) and in Japan ( the home of Sony and Nintendo ) Nintendo is stronger than Sony.

Not really? The PS4 is taking the Wii U to the cleaners in America.

Nintendo are alot more then Hardware sales. There software strives far and beyond Sonys. Sony do make the fastest selling platforms, however hardware aside PS is pretty small in comparison.

What's the best seller console ever in the US? DS, which outsold the PS2 by nearly 10 million.

No, I don't think so. Maybe in a few years they might be, but Nintendo has more recognizable characters.
