Forums - Sony Discussion - Is PlayStation Just As Iconic As Nintendo?

the_dark_lewd said:
Not as "iconic" because they don't have as many icons. Everyone in the developed world has heard of Mario and Zelda. Only gamers know about Nathan Drake and Ratchet&Clank.

But Playstation is undoubtedly regarded as the dominant force in console gaming by pretty much everyone at this point. When you have 4 successful consoles in a row, people take notice.

Another perfect explanation! I wish people would just read this and then stop posting. It's really that simple.

I bet the Wii U would sell more than 15M LTD by the end of 2015. He bet it would sell less. I lost.

The wii was a fluke that happened to catch the interest of casuals and you guys know that. It wasn't a mario or zelda that caught their attention. It was wii sports.

And?? didn´t Ps2 had the casual crowd too? remember Eye Toy? remember the amount of casual shovelware that the console had? and what? Do you think PS4 has no casuals on it watching interactive movies? The winner always takes the casual crowd, but the 7 milions that Twilight princess sold, the 11 milions of smash bros and the 20 milions of mario galaxy were not from soccer moms and granmathers you know?

Wii existed, and wii WON, get over it.

Playstation have beaten Nintendo 3 times from 4 generations.

PS1 destroyed N64
PS2 destroyed Gamecube
PS4 destroyed Wii U

Every 4 Playstation home consoles sold 80M+ (PS4 will easily sell 80M+ too).
From 6 Nintendo home console only 1 sold 80M+.

The difference between the worst selling Playstation (Playstation 3) and the best selling Nintendo console (Wii) is 15M.
The difference between the worst selling Nintendo console (Gamecube) and the best selling Playstation (Playstation 2) is 136M.

The consoles themselves are the icons.

"This diversity is really what allowed the PlayStation brand to dominate the industry; the PS2 had just about every conceivable genre on earth, while the same could not be said of GameCube and Xbox, for instance."

...What about gen 7?

It's an exception,Nintendo was able to attract peoples that never cared about videogames before and they wasn't able to keep them this gen

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

People really don´t understand the word iconic, they are thinking on the word popular instead.

Many of the users like you seem to think we're comparing mascots when it's about the brands themselves. Playstation has become the symbol/icon of gaming a while ago.  How revelent a brand is in the market matters because it's about which brand is more iconic.

In order for something to remain the symbol of an entire industry, it has to remain popular or revelent otherwise it becomes just the icon of days long since passed.  Everyone knows of nintendo and it's mascots but not many gamers actually want to experience it's games. it's no different than the music that old people listen to. It is completely out of touch with gaming of today and has become less iconic than playstation.

Icon, a person or thing regarded as a representative symbol of something.

More people than sony's games at least, lol. Does Sony even have a single ten million+ selling franchise?

Other question: How many ten million+ sellers does Nintendo have from third party games?

Let's not forget the 12-16 month period where no PS3  console was for sale, and then the staggeringly different launch price too.

People love pointing to the Wii as proof of Nintendo ability to shift units, all it really shows me is that it's possible to strike it lucky occasionally with trends.

The Wii hit a window at the right time with the right price, that windows closed and been bricked over.

DS beat PSP, 3DS beat Vita and Wii beat PS3.

The difference between the best selling Nintendo game and the best selling Sony game is what? 40M?

Meaningless post.

Sony were the first one to crack all gaming markets simultaneously.

Nintendo really alienated Europe in the 80s and 90s through their illegal practices.

Hence Sony were the first to truly own the European market which prior to the ps1 had been much more fragmented particularly with the popularity of home computers.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Cool story bro, still Nintendo sold more consoles than the 2 best selling playstation systems of all time combined just last generattion ;)

Also, when talking about sales, hasn't Nintendo crushed every generation when it comes to console sales(handheld+ home)? They even lead this one with a healthy 30mn margin.

The PS2 was far more popular than the GBA and GC combined and I would be shocked if the PS4 didn't outsell the WiiU and 3DS combined (although by a far smaller margin).
