Forums - Sony Discussion - Is PlayStation Just As Iconic As Nintendo?

Nintendo. I just asked my friends, one of them is a Nintendo fan, one plays only on PC and the other one had 360 last generation. All of them said Nintendo. You have to think about the brand name, the company and it's mascots. Nintendo succeded with making Mario, Zelda a name to recognize. My mother knows who Mario is, but not Nathan, Spyro etc. I would even say that Sega is more iconic than Sony.

You don't have to look at the mascot at all. As long as there's something relatable to the brand. It can be the name itself, a symbol, icon, a game, etc.
Way more people game on Apple than Nintendo, and in spite of missing a mascot, Apple is still a much more recognisable brand for gamers. Because almost everyone is a gamer today. Played Candy Crush? = Gamer.
And you're focusing way too much on the mascot aspect given your Sega example. Because if we look at the brand name or the company, it's practically non existent in media today.
Elder/non-gamers are the smallest and least informed group when it comes to console brand recognition though. For example, my aunt recognizes Sonic, but she doesn't know what Sega is. Since she's only seen it being played on a Playstation console, she associates the character with Playstation, so it actually strengthens the Playstation brand recognition.

Discussion is over; he asked his friends!

Nintendo is fading fast, playstation is still strong

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Don´t read it out of context, read the entire conversation, it has nothing to do with that. It starts with "Nintendo stronger than Sony in America? Plz dude, plz..." and the argument was sales.

The topic is also in relation to NOW, not last year or the year before. What did Nintendo do this year? Released Splatoon, lost E3, and lost Iwata. Oh, and they shot their own sales in the foot by confirming the NX.

No, the topic is about being ICONIC, not about being a trend, something is not iconic from one day to the other, it takes years and decades to become iconic, and you are trying to say that Nintendo is less iconic because they sell less right now wich makes no fucking sense. Iconic =/= "a la mode"

(And what the hell has Iwata death to do with this??! Jesus...)

Your avatar finally loaded for me. It explains a lot. Enjoy!

Ard you sure about that? Donkey Kong Country Returns sold 6.5 million and Twilight Princess sold almost 9 million ( GC+Wii).

Yeah, I'm sure about that. DK and Zelda are iconic IPs of nintendo but that has little consumer appeal outside of nintendo's fanbase. Nintendo consoles at best are seen as a secondary consoles to the main consoles. Everyone in gaming knows of nintendo and it's IPs but not many people outside of nintendo's fanbase actually want to play those games. Nintendo's brand or it being the icon/symbol of gaming has weakened to the point that people think of playstation or xbox first when it comes to video games. The wii sold 100 million consoles. It had a real chance to build up it's core fanbase and sink their claws into people for later gens but it lost every bit of public interest with the wii u. Apparently, alot of those 100 million people could live without all of nintendo's main IPs.

If you ask me, not many Sony/MS IPs have that much appeal out of their respective fanbases either. The only exceptions being Halo, Gran Turismo and maybe Uncharted. Most of my friends play CoD, LoL, Counter-Strike, GTA, etc... and would never care about Forza or LittleBigPlanet.

Well I'm in my early 20's and for me gaming has always meant Playstation. And to my peers is the same so I would say yes.

well as the brand and name of playstation i guess yes.
Alot people now a days do know playstation but dont know SNES and co.

But in terms of IP, no.
Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart...Alot more popular as anything sony owns.

Oh yes, my Splatoon avatar makes my argument invalid, that´s very mature. And still your best argument in this whole thread.

You guys are kind of confusing two different things here.

Jack Nicholson is a more iconic Hollywood actor than Chris Pratt, but that doesn't mean the next Jack Nicholson movie is going to make more money than Jurassic World or whatever Pratt is in.

Nintendo is the most iconic vide game brand, Mario alone secures that, everyone from little kids to 90 year old grandmas know Mario.

But that doesn't mean Nintendo today is more popular than the Playstation 4 or whatever. These are two different things a lot of people are confusing.

"I think it's obvious that the original PlayStation (and in fact, all PlayStations) had a wider variety of gameplay experiences, from the likes of Metal Gear Solid to JRPGs to the first simulators. This diversity is really what allowed the PlayStation brand to dominate the industry; the PS2 had just about every conceivable genre on earth, while the same could not be said of GameCube and Xbox, for instance."

Is it that obvious?
