i say nope

That's remind me a situation a long time ago.

I was playing Mario Kart Wii with my relatives then my uncle enter in my room and said: "This game is awesome! I want to buy this for my kids, but is hard to find a copy for ps3!"

We reap what we sow

PlayStation is in an interesting position. People have nostalgia for it that helps its brand, but most of the brand's defining early games are now third party. Moreover, the defining games of the PS2 are mostly irrelevant now, because Sony changes with its audience so much that they damn the "less appealing" franchises with shitty advertising and support. The only remaining PS1 franchise is GT, and the only remaining PS2 ones are GoW (in a lull as of late) and Ratchet. Many of the PS3 franchises died WITHIN that gen, leaving Uncharted, LBP, and Killzone as the main living PS3 franchises today, and one of of those is probably ending next year. The closest thing the PS brand had to a mascot was Sackboy for about a year and overall Ratchet. And what does it say about Sony that, after starting with third party characters, their most lasting franchise and mascot was created by a third party?

So what does that mean for PS? It means that, yes, they know when to kill a franchise and move on, but it also means their brand is very liquid compared to the solid gold that Nintendo produces. Many fans will beg for them to bring back key franchises, like Jak or Sly or Legend of Dragoon or what have you, and when Sony refuses to support those projects it hurts that liquid brand. Nintendo can take a few chips when fans beg for Metroid and we get Federation Force because they're just so well-built for that.

I know I rambled a bit, but my point is, yes and no. They CAN be as iconic as Nintendo when they're at their best and we're using the correct frame of reference, but their constant metamorphoses hurt their lasting brand recognition. If they enforced Ratchet as their mascot it'd help a good amount, and that might be what they start doing come 2016 when their movies start taking off.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

I think that PlayStation has been the most relevant gaming platform in recent history and that it has helped define and revolutionize gaming as we know it, however I don't think that PlayStation games and characters are iconic at all because they usually have a high degree of complexity and Sony doesn't have a tendency to support their own IP's for long periods of time, I mean, after a while, studios move on to newer projects, and that it makes it harder for characters and franchises to establish as icons. Nintendo on the other hand, has supported their characters for many generations, but every time they come back they bring something innovative with them. Besides the characters are more simple and pretty overall starting from the graphic design. I think that both approaches are good and that both brands are innovative, while Nintendo does it by holding on to their IP (thus creating icons), Sony does it by creating new IP and offering a diverse, ever-evolving library of games and characters.

Actually Gran Turismo is. Oh and Uncharted sells more per game than AC in Europe as well.

Assasins creed III outsold Uncharted and Uncharted 2, and there is no Uncharted on the top 10.

For main series games on PS3 Uncharted sold more total and more per game.

Uncharted 1.72 Assassin's Creed 2.01
Uncharted 2 2.17 Assassin's Creed II 1.93
Uncharted 3 2.73 Assassin's Creed III 2.54
Total 6.62 Total 6.48
Average 2.21 Average 2.16

And so what if Uncharted isn't in the top 10? There's also no AC in the top 10 but you claimed that was more popular so...

Is on the top 6 of Ps4...

And yes, here AC is way more popular than Uncharted, you are showing me that they sold the same, but AC is not only on Ps but on Xbox360 and pc too and still sold the same.

You know what? I think I see the problem here. We're comparing Nintendo the company vs PlayStation the console brand.

Compare Sony to Nintendo or PlayStation vs Nintendo console X

When your worst selling home console is 80m+ units that says something. I still believe overall Nintendo wins due to the emphasis on software (for better and worse), but Sony wins from a hardware standpoint. There's no arguing that.

Nintendo never wins even when they win. Didnt you know that?

The point is they WON. The only Nintendo console in that list that is still developed for is... Well, none of them. Only the XB360 still has software regularly released for it on that list

What are you talking about? Nintendo sold 250 milions of consoles last generation, period. Just because they have a bad generation now doesnt mean they are irrelevant or just because Wii appeal to the casual market doesnt mean it didn´t won.

What does any of this have to do with being iconic though? Didn't we already establish that hardware sales do not translate into being iconic?

I don't understand why people are still arguing hardware sales.

PS: Gran Turismo is huge in Europe, was already back in the 90's. My older sister's friends used to come over to play on my PS1 and even my dad loves the GT series.

Both PlayStation and Nintendo are iconic, but I would say that PlayStation has become more iconic than Nintendo.

Or maybe I didn't want to repeat what was already said. You know. And the way you talk just shows how good you feel about your arguments. This is a sterile conversation.
