It has 16 bosses, and besides that you just do a whole bunch of walking (okay, riding). The reason people hailed it was because of the story it told, which is the appeal of these games as well.

m0ney is right, the boss battles are some of the most exhilarating and memorable action experienced in the 6th generation. Made all the more so because of the anticipation.
