Again, that is complete BS. You are taking what you want and are applying it to the whole market with nothing to back it up. You're speaking of growing their devices when in actuality they would just try to enter an already extremely crowded market, with no discernable advantage that people actually care about, todays smartphones/tablets are easily able to handle current day handheld gaming and it is also quite easily possible to connect a controller to a smartphone/tablet so even input isn't a problem should you want that. But here's the funny thing: Most people don't. You say that most people that bought a DS or PSP would go with a Nintendo/Playstation-phone if it was available (which btw entirely ignores that Sony already had a failed experiment with a PS phone), but that notion is easily disproven by what is going on in the current, especially western, market. People are not looking for "high quality gaming experiences on the go", they are looking for quick and easy games that they can pick up, enjoy for a couple minutes on the train and then be done with it. Let me give you a personal example, when I was still living with my father his girlfriend and her kids they had 7 DS's in that house and 2 PSPs. You know what all those handhelds were replaced with? Smartphones and tablets. And nobody is complaining about the lack of high quality games on those devices cause all they want are some quick and easy games they can play when they have a couple minutes to kill, when they are looking for quality gaming they are going for consoles or PCs. Lets be real here: You want a PS phone, nothing less, nothing more. |
First thing, Sony has never experimented with a PlayStation Phone. The Xperia Play was basterd device forced by Ericsson. The Xperia Play never had access to PlayStation Network, and only got support from PlayStation Mobile which PlayStation never backed, marketed, or cared about, and is being shut down completely on September 10th. PlayStation's closest attempt at a phone was the 3G Vita with Skype, but that was never pushed, and 99% of Vita owners still don't know they can make calls to anyone via the device, and 99.9% of non Vita owners don't even know a handheld that could make phone calls has ever exsited.
Second thing, Sony is already in the mobile business. They have Xperia devices running on a competitors OS, and they have absolutly no way to stand out, or ever doing anything to gain traction. By moving to their own mobile OS, and utilizing everything they have already built on PlayStation Network, they would gain multiple advantages. This is the only move they can make if they ever want to make it in the mobile industry. They have to leverage their biggest brand, unify the company image, and shake up the market with something new and more functional.
Third thing, Yes I want a PlayStation Phone, and I already have one in my 3G Vita. However, that is not the point. I don't care if it is PlayStation, Microsoft, Nintendo, or even Steam. I JUST WANT A MOBILE PLATFORM OF ANY KIND THAT IS GAMES FIRST, and I meet new people everyday that feel the same way. All of the other stuff will come if the platform is done right. The first 200M users will come for games, the next 200M will come because, the platform will get all of the stuff available on Android and iOS, due to the size of the Userbase, and the higher dollar per user ratio the platform would offer.
Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

The "game nerd" audience isn't that large. Most normal people want either iOS or Android, a Playstation OS as a phone would be a disaster. No app support, missing severe functionality. Even Microsoft can't make headway into the smartphone business and they have Windows going for them, Sony wouldn't have a prayer.
Smartphones are not toys or even home electronic components where functionality can be missing and it's an "oh well, maybe they can add that in the next firmware update". That's not even remotely close to good enough. A smartphone is the center of a lot of people's day to day lives outside the home and even in the home. It needs to function in a serious way.
The other problem is most "hardcore gamers" (or dudebros types) don't even want to play "real" games on the go. That's what their PS4/XB1 and 50-inch TV is for, if they have some down time away from the house, a freeware game more than takes care of a 15-20 minute urge to play something without having to drop $40-$60 that could have been spent on a console game.
Nintendo's NX is probably launching next year and will likely have better than Vita graphics (Wii U quality?), which will pretty much take care of whatever audience is left for a dedicated portable gaming platform. I don't think there's any room for anyone else.

August 2015 NPD Results for the 3DS: 77,000
Nintendo needs to take very close note of these results. The 3DS is down YoY by 15% after only having released the New 3DS model 5 months earlier.
The movement to smartphones away from dedicated handhelds could be accelerating. Hopefully, Nintendo doesn't use the 3DS's 60 million install base as a justification for not shaking up their next generation of portable consoles. Nintendo needs a radically different concept to pull users back away from smartphones.
At this point, I am really starting to hope that the NX is a unified home console/portable device. Nintendo can earn back it's lost revenue from having two hardware streams by focusing heavily on mobile gaming. At this point, I am afraid that a separate handheld and console is not the way to go for next gen. I don't think that dedicated handhelds will have the strength to buoy Nintendo in a year's time.
Yup, it appears the era of the dedicated handheld is sadly coming to an end.
Tablets are good for casual games like angry birds but for games that require precise control like platform games they are completely useless.
Yuck, screw the trend.
I want the attach rate for the 3DS to reach 10, but sadly it won't happen.

I WON A BET AGAINST AZUREN! WOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I'm starting to think yeah maybe the hybrid concept is the way to go. At least it would be unique (portable + instant mini-console) from anything else on the market.
I don't know where Nintendo goes in the West right now. They are getting killed, the 3DS had a decent start here, but I think cheap tablets in particular have done a number on Nintendo's handheld market in the US. The acceleration of cheapo Android tablets through 2013 and 2014 in particular have hurt I think.
