August 2015 NPD Results for the 3DS:  77,000

Nintendo needs to take very close note of these results.  The 3DS is down YoY by 15% after only having released the New 3DS model 5 months earlier.

The movement to smartphones away from dedicated handhelds could be accelerating.  Hopefully, Nintendo doesn't use the 3DS's 60 million install base as a justification for not shaking up their next generation of portable consoles.  Nintendo needs a radically different concept to pull users back away from smartphones.

At this point, I am really starting to hope that the NX is a unified home console/portable device.  Nintendo can earn back it's lost revenue from having two hardware streams by focusing heavily on mobile gaming.  At this point, I am afraid that a separate handheld and console is not the way to go for next gen.  I don't think that dedicated handhelds will have the strength to buoy Nintendo in a year's time.
