Forums - Gaming - My take on Rise of the Tomb Raider after the Gamescom demo

Well, yours is the first "negative" preview I've read. Most others praise the game, say it's a much improved sequel.
And I really liked the 2013 reboot, it was an excellent game, almost my GOTY were it not for GTA. I've played and replayed it several times, and am planning to play it again.
Too bad I need to wait another year to play it, I am sure it will be an awesome game. Unfortunately, it might underperform this holiday season sales-wise, too much high profile competition along with launching to a limited audience.

I guess we have different expectations ;) To me, for a game that takes itself so seriously, it has poor writing and the gameplay is too derivative. It's entertaining sure, but not really memorable. But I can understand why a lot of people like it.

i really loved 2013 TR, the only game on my ps3 i played several times.
Is like uncharted, but with much more sense of exploration with all metroidvania elements.(going back on previous areas with new abilities to explore more than you could before, i love that.)

that video is what shouldve been shown at Gamescom conference instead of the boring stealth one they showed. This one looked much better. Made my interest peak more than it had been.

I agree with him. I finished the reboot yesterday and it's forgettable at best, all his points are valid about it (and we could say even more).

In fairness this is the first preview with a negative tone that I've read. But it's quite simple. This game isn't for you. You know what you are going to get and you don't want it. Now that's a shame but it is what it is, however there's plenty of others out there (like me) who cannot wait for more Lara and I cannot wait for more. Each to their own I suppose.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

The reboot wasn't bad but I quickly got tired of shooting people. Higher kill count doesn't make a better game. I'm hoping the bigger tombs are worth it as they were just 5 minute distractions in the reboot. I remember less of the reboot than of the first 2 games, so yes, forgettable.

The exploration in that footage looks linear and scripted and platforming looks very automatic like Uncharted. Maybe the puzzles begin where the footage ends at 10:46. Some huge deserted tombs to sink your teeth in, get lost for an hour trying to figure out the pieces of a huge interconnected puzzle. I'm still hoping that's in there somewhere.

Good verdict

It's not that the game "isn't for me", the fact is that the prequel had shortcomings and from what I have seen so far developers are doing the same mistakes. I love the action adventure genre, and I like Uncharted for example, but this game imho didn't do anything new and a lot of things are poorly done. I understand that my opinion is on the minority side, I can deal with it with no problems. Anyway I hope you and a lot of people can enjoy the game when it comes out :)

That's what I've been saying, you can't call your game Tomb Raider without having exploration and puzzles. It's really the only thing that can make this game a bit different. The developers said that there are going to be more tombs, but if they are all scripted like this or a tiny room like in the prequel, meh...

My biggest issue with the reboot was that it was like Bollywood film. It made me cringe once to many times with Lara having to almost die every other step she took followed by her talking to herself. The story and dialogue left a lot to be desired.

I was hoping they would change the over theatrical moments to just a few but seems like nothing has changed. It certainly has made Lara one of the less likeable characters in gaming for me, where as one she used to be one of the most liked.

I remember the first gameplay we saw and I joked to say let's see how many times she will have to escape death and I counted almost a dozen instances in the short demo.
