Forums - Gaming - Phil Spencer: Sony buying third party games, all to do with money, not market share

So we can easily assume that everyone in this post saying this is bullshit has a PhD in Economics and a fortune 500 company, right? Cuz it sure seems that way

Well, neither does Phil Spencer, but that doesn't prevent him for talking nonsense in public. Why would any one of us be better?

Why would PhD and owning a company give absolute proof to anyones word? Should anyone who do not have those two merits you mentioned shut outside of any business conversation? Simple proof of PhD does not make anyone immune to misunderstanding. There are a lot of people who have no business education at all but have still managed to find success in stock market. Were all these people just lucky? Or could it be possible those people figured out on their own how business works?

I cannot imagine toilet-free life.

Kebabs have a unique attribute compared to other consumables. To unlock this effect you need to wolf down a big ass kebab really fast, like under 10 minutes or so and wait for the effect to kick in. If done correctly your movements should feel unbelievably heavy to the point where you literally cannot move at all.

I hope gamers realize if Marketshare doesn't matter, he just said that Microsoft is not letting the Xbox division tap into the warchest. So much for those infinite powers of the Microsoft warchest rumors. That leaves more doubt than marketshare.

You can't have it both ways. Either market share matters, or Microsoft is pulling the reins on the Xbox divisions budget.

Precisely Protendo-San. Both options cannot exist at the same time; Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo irrelevant. If anything, this is interesting to me how Spencer-Sensei brings up such issues, but Yoshida-Sensei never did during the 7th generation era. I still like Spencer-Sensei, but it was odd of him to say such statements.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said that market share has nothing to do with the third-party exclusive we are seeing on PS4, it's all about the money.

Speaking to GameSpot about third-party exclusives on PS4, Spencer said: "So, they don't "gobble" the deals up. They buy them. You know, I read the same things you do, and I know some people think it's somehow less expensive to sign third-party exclusives if you have a bigger market-share. I can tell you, it has nothing to do with market share."

He added: "When you go in to do a deal, with a third party, that third party has its own view of the global market and the value of it. And they should, they should think about their assets and how valuable they are, just like anyone would when they are selling their goods."

Or maybe they never spent or planned on spending infinite amount of money on Xbox division. They're doing business after all. Strong lineup for holidays and couple of deals made + plans on focusing 1st party.. Maybe no need to pay alot for COD.

It's possible, but why go against their long established past presedent now?

Well I suppose getting outsold 2:1 is an indication they need to re-think their strategy even further :) I think focusing on 1st party exclusives is a way to go so they can at least try to keep up with Sony, build up their userbase, sell more consoles and make profit.

MS has to do what SCE did with the PS3. By no surprise, it is essentially what they are doing with the XBO.

They dropped the price by $100 within the first year. PS4 is still sitting on its debut MSRP, bundled software regardless.

They have been far more consistent with OS updates and added features. PS4 has taken what could best be described as a leisurely approach to added features.

As for the first party support; we'll see how well MS can deliver on that beyond the usual IPs that were a given.

I would like to see the data/evidence that supports the claim that SCE is buying third party games the way MS bought Tomb Raider. It's hard to refute claims without examining the evidence.

It seems far more probable that third party developers would simply prefer to develop for the hardware that has over half of the installed user base in addition to running multiplatform games better in most instances.

So many of you have no business degrees. Look when your selling a product to someone, market share has nothing to do with it. 25m PS4s vs 13m XB1s means little. Both are recognised systems and some games sell better even on consoles with less sales. If every PS4 gamer were to buy the same game then yes you have an argument however games sell a few million at best on either system.

Its all to do with money. XB1 still only has half the user base then the PS4 but look at all the exclusives coming out, if market share was the reason then XB1 would have no exclusives or timed exclusives.

The sad part is fanboys believe companies go with other companies because they love them. Money talks. Sunset Overdrive and Titanfall didn't release on Xbox because they love MS, they released because MS paid them. Just like PS exclusives. Sony pays them and that's there focus this gen.

You don't need a business degree but rather common sense to know that marketshare gives a person sway that money cannot buy. Besides...Sony couldn't outbid Microsoft if they tried. Done deal.

Microsofts biggest deals from last gen came from moneyhatting which was allowed because of their marketshare.
