Forums - Movies & TV - Recommend me a book

Want a heavy series (10+ books give or take)? Wheel of Time or Sword of Truth, age 17+

Want medium series? The Mirror of Her Dreams/A Man Walks Through (warning romance, 2 books, age 17+ kinda) or The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (6 books if you want to read the full series, if I remember correct)

Want light? Harry Potter (7 books) or Belgariad/The Malloreon series (10 books total I think)

A warrior keeps death on the mind from the moment of their first breath to the moment of their last.

The Metro books (yes, the books the games are based on.)

I think The Martian would be a great place for you to start. It's not too long, the plot is interesting but still relatively simple, and it's entirely self contained. It does assume a degree of intelligence from the reader (it's littered with engineering terminology and the like), but it's always done in a way that even when you don't fully understand the science behind something mentioned, you understand the end result and its importance to the plot.

Adding to all that, it's not one of those "you need to keep reading to get into it" books. You'll know within a few chapters if you're going to enjoy it or not.

Yup dito on The Martian... You will love this book

High Fidelity from Nick Hornby, one of my favourite books.

Almost everything from Stephen King is gold.

I recently been reading a lot of Mario Puzo stuff (The Sicilian, The Last Don, Omerta); if you like the Godfather (or you are interested in Italian Mafia), you can't go wrong with Puzo.

Except he usually uses 10-15 pages on discriptions and painting a scenery and only 1 page on actual actions that happend inside the universe.

His books are heavy, usually the first few chapters are so full of useless details, you find yourself going "wtf why doesnt he just start his story telling already!"

Hes a decent writer, but you have to like his story telling style. Hes a known name, thats kinda overrated IMO.

My recammendation:

Anything from Asimov, Isaac Asimov.
I think you should start by reading the "Foundation series".

"The premise of the series is that the mathematician Hari Seldon spent his life developing a branch of mathematics known as psychohistory, a concept of mathematical sociology. Using the laws of mass action, it can predict the future, but only on a large scale."

Basically the future is crap, and hes going to use his math skills to manipulate the outcome of the future.
Each book stands on its own, but you should read them in order.

Best sci-fi serie ever made IMO

If you like the genre, then listen to this man and buy the main triology.

I was the same way up until I was your age. Had only read a handful of books up until I graduated high school. If it helps, you usually have way more free time at university/college, unless you're working tons of hours during your summer and winter breaks. The schedule is so much better than high school.

If you want a good, slow-burn horror, read Salem's Lot.
If you want a 20th century classic that holds up today, read Fahrenheit 451 or 1984.
If you want a real-life adventure story, read Into the Wild or Between a Rock and a Hard Place.
And if you want books that everybody seem to love, read the Harry Potter books.

Congrats on going off to university! Have fun and study hard!

It'll be awhile before I figure out how to do one of these. :P

I only read four books;

The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings 1, 2 and 3, so... take your pick .

I've never been a guy that reads a lot. I have been intrigued by some, and reading stuff online makes me interested in getting started on reading. So I thought, right before going to start university, it's best if I start reading some books.

I guess anything works. Books on history, game design, original stories, etc. If it helps, I've read like 5 books in my entire life: one about the history of football, Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Orange Girl, Bullshit stories (my sister gave that to me), and an inspirational-teenagers life and difficulties tips book (eugh).

What I do dislike are series' or long sagas. Either one book long story or 2. Anyway, I'd appreciate what you guys and gals can recommend me, and thanks.

Book is a window of knowledge, i now at the present we can get a lot of information from Internet, but the basic  foundation is still a literature that is consistent and wrote under an expert and trusted.

For me i like religion and philosophy, and also like tech and science. So if you want my recommendation you can read "The Bible, the Quran, and Science" by Dr. Maurice Bucaille
