Forums - Nintendo - Talking Point: Wii U Gamers Have Been Treated Poorly By The Third-Party Retail Scene, But The System Still Brings Joy

I still can't understand who buys games like Mass Effect 3 on Wii U...
Wii U doesn't have the target audience for these games!

I bought Mass Effect 3 on the Wii U and it was quite good. The interactive comic did a good enough job of explaininmg the basic premise. However, I got the PC version later for all the DLC as well as 1080p60 goodness. I didnt have any problems with the ports until they a) stopped coming and b) were never any better than PS3/360 versions. At the very least youd expect the new gen console to brute force 7th gen ports at 720p60

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

As the article said, we were given shit and expected to buy it. I did, but most do not care.

Not all were shit, I played a good amount of third party games on my friends Wii U and it felt fine.

Shit is a harsh term when it comes to this. They all worked, and were good game. However, they aren't generally up to par for the releases. They generally ran worse, had missing features and had no extra support after release. Not shit, but at the same time, not products that were backed quality products either.

I own most of them and I have been generally happy with them, but that's not to say that there aren't issues with them, that is fairly naive.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

Did anybody buy a Wii U actually expecting long term third party support? Honestly? It isn't as if third parties were just going to change their tune towards Nintendo after two generations of basically turning completely over to Sony, another generation of halfassing almost everything they did on the Wii, and then going back to Sony once again this generation.

Nintendo consoles sell to Nintendo fans who want to play Nintendo games.

Well they did cause EA were holding hands with Nintendo at E3 praising the Wii U on stage. So everyone though NIntendo talked to the devs and addressed their hardware concerns.

I did.

Here's the thing dude. I am generally a Nintendo fan, I enjoy most of the games they release and they are undeniably high quality games that you know what you are getting when you buy them.

With that said, it does not mean that I do not like games of all types and varieties so I will happily buy any game that interests me. Having both Nintendo and third parties on a single console is very appealing for me. For the most part I don't see a reason to purchase another console from the offerings of MS and Sony and a console just for thirds also isn't worth a purchase for me. So basically it's like a sundae, but with a cherry on top.

For reference, the third party games I own on the Wii U are,

Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Mass Effect 3, Both Arkham games, both AC games, both COD's, Bayonetta 1+2(depends how you count it), Darksiders 2, Deus Ex: HR, Disney Infinity 1.0, Epic Mickey 2, Just Dance 2014, most of the Lego games (will likely get all of them when they are a price I like) along with Lego City, Monster Hunter 3, Ninja Gaiden 3, Scribblenauts Unlimited, Watchdogs, Wonderful 101, and Zombi U.

I'm quite sure I'm not the normal gamer, but to say there isn't any support for the "target audience" is BS. Here's the thing with a console. If you put the games for a taget audience on it, that audience will generally buy it. In opposition to your statement comes to fans of certain consoles or brands, some will not buy another brand, it's called brand loyalty. As I said, I am generally a Nintendo fan and I stated why. That's not to say I'm opposed to buying another console at all though, I'm quite tempted to buy a X1 due to some of the games coming out for the system, but it's a matter of price and timing, plus convincing my wife.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

That's some hardcore generalizing you are doing there.

It was stated they did talk to lots of devs about the console. EA of course being one of them, Ubisoft as well, and Activision, among the majority of the bigger Japanese devs. That's why there was support from all of them to begin with. Nintendo and THQ also made a huge deal, but unfortunately THQ went belly up. The only devs that said Nintendo didn't go to them were Bethesda and Epic. Neither have ever supported Nintendo so it doesn't make sense to waste resources on them, they did however supply them with dev kits.

All I gotta say is this. For a console to stay afloat without any substantial third party support is pretty damn impressive.

Monolith is not "outside" of Nintendo. Its a Nintendo first Party Studio like Retro.

I consider Retro and Monolith second party. Nintendo didn't create those studios... they bought them. Just like Naught Dog for Sony and Bungie with Microsoft. Those studios existed before they were purchased by these big companies.

All I need is Nintendo games and nindies.
