Yes, they've tried quite hard in the past.  They've bought plenty of Japanese exclusives over the years.  Bill Gates was the keynote speaker for the very first Xbox TGS appearance.

When I went to TGS 2008, they had a very strong presence there. Then, they were trying to establish themselves in Japan. Fast forward 7 years and it's clear, even to Microsoft, that Japan is not interested.

This is hardly surprising considering the abject failure of the ONE, even by the standards of the Xbox brand, in Japan. Isn't it amazing to think that Microsoft spearheaded the MSX architecture which went on to become the most popular PC in Japanese history? Just imagine what Microsoft could have accomplished with Xbox if they properly leveraged the games released on the MSX.

That stinks. I spent a ton of time at the Microsoft booth at TGS last year (my first) because it was far less crowded than Sony's booth. With both Nintendo and MS being no shows at TGS this year I fear the show may be losing relevancy.
