That would be if the premise of the game was truly random, but it isn't. You can warp to planets which you can see others have discovered, and thus raise the chance of meeting someone there. Similarly you could organize meeting up with someone and there's a good chance that a certain planet will have something "great" on them so via online forums, it could be busier. And finally everyone's going to the same place so eventually you'll meet someone in the same place.
Not saying the game isn't unbelievably huge because it is. However it also isn't completely random. No doubt loads of people won't meet others though as you say but I feel the odds will be slightly more in your favour.
I think people will run into each other around space stations and trading hubs compared to planets. I saw in one interview that players will not have their names or info on their characters or ships. So if two players see each other, they won't know that they are another player unless they're act like a person and not a npc.

now imagine if they start each player about the same distance away from the center. As players progress towards the center from every angle they would make a sort of sphere. As they get closer and closer to the center that sphere gets smaller and smaller. Now, even though the universe is gigantic, most the players will be operating in this much smaller sphere of the universe towards the center, does that make sense to you? |
yeah i do understand your point but the universe will also be gigantic at the very close point to the universe. You may be able to see other players the last 0,1% before you reach the center, maybe. More is unrealistic.
Many people made this point and its kind of right. but even if you increase the chance to visit somebody from 2e^-23% to 2e^-10% (when you get closer and closer) its still a incredible small %-chance.
Only in the very last few seconds before you reach the center the space would shrink that much, that you might be able to see some other players. But as long as you are 5minutes+ away from the center, the chances are still incredible small.
I think the idea is that in the outer ridges of space it's all about you making discoveries, no point having everyone else come along and discover something 2 months after the game has been out and you just start playing it. But after X amount of travelling inwards then the case will be that you can find other people.
The question is how long will it take to get to the centre and how long will it take to find someone else :)
