Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft cuts another 7,800 jobs, takes $7.6 billion "impairment charge"

Well looks like the Nokia acquisition is another in a long line of mergers & acquisitions that didn't really work out.

Good, these people probably did nothing at work, but play with their phones all day.

People like that annoy me. What kind of generation is this? People are on their phones while on the job. It's good to see justice for once. M$ knows how to cut down on people like that. Other companies should lay people off that play with there phones at work, too. This is good management.

What ... er ... what? This is a joke isn't it? I really can't tell anymore.

The PS5 Exists.

Microsofts mobile division was always doomed. No one cares for the nokia brand anymore.

Microsoft struggles with adoption to windows phone, so they buy the least popular mobile hardware company... makes sense.

They needed to buy (or partner with) a popular yet a not-samsung/apple-level-of-popular brand to elevate windows phone sales.
Hell Sony mobile has a bit of a following, if Sony made a flagship windows phone for MS, it could have worked well.

Also, probably impossible but windows phone needs access to android store. Pay google a small cut if tech-wise it is possible and you remove one barrier for entry.

Gawd, hope they land on their feet.

How was Skype a waste of money?

$8 billion for a free video calling service doesn't seem like a very good business decision to me.

In all seriousness, how do they make money on Skype? I know you can add credit to call/text mobiles but does anybody use that to justify the $8B purchase?

Hey kowen look at all this ignorence

This was planned since day 1 whether mobile workforce ld be banging or not... They have a tone of overlap to cut... And considering WP8 is barely 3 yo and has already come back on apple and even passed apple in several major European market I wouldn't call that bad business... Pretty sure it'll do just fine in the long run especially in the business low cost market (where the real solid dough is)

Skype is not free and is officially fused with link which makes one of the biggest VoIP solution out there...

So yeah realm bad business right.,,

MS will and has to do Mobile first cloud first and support it with the right HW.. And as always will be reporting major profits you doing it...

MS is always the worst most stupid company... Yet they've been here longer, did and does better than most company in the same space for way longer too... And will continue to do so no doubt...

Hope the guys getting laid off, will find another job as soon as possible .

Microsoft is one of those companies that can do as many restructures/layoffs as necessary because you've got to be insane to think they're in trouble.

They really wasted their money on Nokia and Skype.

They wasted their money in Mincecraft. Massive risk for something that could fizzle out with the second title.

Indeed. For $2 billion dollars, it would have been better invested 20 AAA IP in house as opposed to one title. Maybe then games like Lost Oddessy 2, Blue Drgaon 2, The Last Remenant 2, Infinite Discovery 2, and Magna Carta 3 would be here, Shadow Complex 2 no less.
