Survivor outraged by Nintendo game
14/03/2008
By Dana Gloger

A HOLOCAUST survivor has condemned a new Nintendo video game based on the Holocaust.

Jack Kagan, originally from Novogrudok, Belarus, but who now lives in London, said he was outraged at the idea for the game, Imagination is the Only Escape.

It asks players to take on the role of a young boy in Eastern France during the German occupation. The character tries to escape the real life horrors through a fantasy world.

“The Holocaust is serious for all humanity and I don’t think anyone should make this kind of game. I’m very upset by it,” Mr Kagan said.

The game is being developed by 21-year-old Briton Luc Bernard, whose mother is Jewish. It is being produced by Alten8, a private company licensed to develop games for Nintendo UK.

Mr Bernard, who now lives in France, told the JC that the game was intended to educate people about the Holocaust.

“This is to educate children. I don’t find war to be a game and this will not contain any violence. Lots of other war games just have a lot of shooting and don’t really show what war is, but that’s not what I’m doing,” he said.

But Mr Kagan said: “This is not educational. Holocaust education should not be done through games of this nature. People can read and watch things about the Holocaust, they do not need these kinds of games.”

He also criticised Nintendo.

Mr Bernard said the idea came after he spent around a year reading about the Holocaust and watching films on it.

“It traumatised me and I was very shocked. I didn’t know it was that bad and I don’t think they teach you that much about it at school, so I thought it would be easier to educate people through a game.”

Mr Bernard said that one of those helping him with ideas for the game was “a Jewish mother” — the mother of his on-off girlfriend, and that he welcomed all comments on the idea.

A Nintendo spokesman said: “Nintendo Europe can confirm that they have not yet been contacted by developer Luc Bernard regarding the release and have no further comment to add.”

A spokesman for Alten8 said: “We were shocked at such an adverse reaction from some parts of the media about this game, especially as they were based on Luc’s blog , as opposed to facts. We are in discussion with Nintendo, and it is likely it will be making an appearance this year. We hope this game and others like it are seen as educational, informative, and enjoyable to play.”

Now, I do acknowledge that games can be pretty educative, but I honestly think this is too far. Games are meant to be enjoyed, and to think someone is going to make a game out of a man's horrifying experience to be enjoyed by the rest of the world is sickening.

What's next, a rape simulator to educate people why rape is wrong? Get real.

If you called it an "interactive educational software program" instead of a "game" it might not bother people as much. He's old and arguing semantics. I will definitely be getting this game and writing something for Rubang's Reviews on it.

That's completely irrelevant. This is not a Holocaust simulator. This is more like Life Is Beautiful: The Game. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it unless you're so crazy you deny the Holocaust happened or something.

If it's really as educational as it has been said before, I have no problem with it. To me it's the same as learning it out of a textbook, or watching an educational video. Thanks mostly to the DS, people have been learning different languages, and having their brains trained.........why not on the Holocaust?

Face it. People have forgotten about the horrors of the Holocaust. He obviously doesn't want Hitlers atrocities to be remembered. That's stupid if you ask me.

It seems to me like he would rather everyone act like it never existed rather than educating people.

Schindler's List is acceptable but a game that deals with the Holocaust in a very serious manner is not.

Bah, some people need to be kicked in the head. Games are maturing, as is their subject matter.

A game where you put Jews in the furnace? Absolutely unacceptable!

The game in question? A great idea!

The problem here is probably that the old guy knows nothing about games, and thinks they're only for fun. He's also clearly too old to change his mind on anything, so we'll just have to ignore him until he dies.

I don't find anything wrong with this.

I think some people don't like this because they think that games are still childrens toys and are not allowed to take on serious subjects or have a message.

Mr. Kagan even says, "People can read and watch things about the Holocaust, they do not need these kinds of games.”

This shows that he doesn't have a problem with the CONTENT, but rather the MEDIUM on which it is being conveyed.

Video games are a medium, a way to communicate and convey ideas, and they have just as much right as any other medium to take on the Holocaust.

He's old, the word 'game' has a lot of negative connotations that are totally absent for all of us gamers.

The Holocaust is part of the history of the world; it's not like we can turn a selectively blind eye to it and only allow it to surface in ''serious, educational movies and books''.

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

i dont know....i dont think it was a subject they should have touched on...why not just set it in space and take out he human element

Are you joking? Movies deal with serious situations all the time. There is nothing wrong with a game showing the horrors of the Holocaust in a serious and educational manner.

People need to get their head out of their ass and realize that games can extend beyond the world of Mario and become a legitimate art form in their own right. This kind of thinking pisses me off.
