Of course most major shooter series are locked into the realism train, they started as realistic war series (usually WWII type stuff). Though... You can't seriously be saying that Halo has unnecessarily real graphics can you? LIYF.

Again most realistic shooters are born from a WWII or other wars. To blame them from not deviating from what clearly _makes_ money is crazy. Blame the gamers. If COD suddenly was Call of Splatoon it would fail harder than FFXIII-4 Tidus Returns.

I will say that even if a series weren't based on an actual existing war most major war series would probably be realistic. That is what _we_ want, gritty shooters where we _murder_ our fellow gamers in visceral combat not cute zaney paint ball fests.

I agree with this. For a game like this, it's what it should be. Could another shooter be like this on another console and succeed? Probably not.

So...it's saving the industry because instead of being realistic, it's colorful and cartoony?

Also, when are we going to get past the old notion that all shooters are gray and brown blobs?

When Nintendo said they wanted Splatoon to be for shooters what Mario Kart is for Racing games and Smash is for fighters, they knew what they were doing. They created another game that can easily keep you busy for months, combines addictive gameplay with easy accessibility and a friendly environnement.
I only feel like I'm ruined for other shooters forever, starting every match with compulsively shooting into the air, because I think I need to ink everything....:P
