By making it the only place you can play zelda, mario and mario kart

Nothing. They will be happy if they reach WiiU numbers, their target market has moved on, and with nothing to offer to adults they have nobody left to sell to except their dwindling hardcore fanbase.

I have no idea what it is yet, but only thing I see is doing the hybrid model so hand held and home console resources are pooled into one system. If it is two separate systems then I struggle to see home console doing better than the Gamecube and hand held doing better than the 3DS.

By making every game home and portable cross-platform and releasing awesome mainline pokémon games and spinoffs. And all of their IPs. And a lot of buy-to-play versions of already popular mobile games.

Use a strategy the opposite of the Wii U and almost the same as the Wii. They had good, memorable TV spots for the Wii and lots of them. The Wii U was abyssmal. The Wii U actually had a better line up when it was released than the Wii, but it didn't have any must have games like Wii Sports (likely a phenomena that might not happen again) but could be challenged by a really solid genre inclusive line up.
Something that Nintendo needs to do is make an action adventure game that is accessible to more age groups as well. Something along the lines of Uncharted and Tomb Raider. That's a genre that is almost completely missing from Nintendo and it's fairly popular.
Lastly, they need to attempt to get third party support... again... Make a system that is beefy enough to run the same games as the competing consoles and is easy to develop for. The easier the better, that way it isn't necessary to have a long porting process so the risk/reward involved works out more in the third parties benefit.

Nothing.... Sad but true. Nintendo abandoned the core gamer a long time ago, and those gamers will now first flock to sony, ms and even the PC before they even give Nintendo a second look.

And that's really the problem, its not that the Nintendo staple of games are no longer there its that the amount of people that actually care about Nintendo consoles now are just insignificant.

On a slightly unrelated note, am I the only person that kinda wants the NX(assuming it's a home console) to fail?  I feel cheated by the Wii U and I think, for the sake of Nintendo, further humbling is in order.  A humbling to Sony's level, in reguards to how Sony handles it's IP's. 

To be honest, Nintendo is getting just worse and worse everyday. I know a lot of people want Nintendo to pull a PS3 to PS4-like transition, but there's a few problems with that: Nintendo has done absolutely nothing to build up consumer confidence -the fact that many speculate Zelda U will be ported to the NX and the fact we know no Metroid is in development loses costumer confidence... you don't want that XD, they don't know how to market -the Wii was marketed very well, the Wii U? Here's a few "trendy" dubstep commericals..., they've made really strange PR decisions (Reggie backtracking Iwata's statement and Reggie saying that they didn't want to disappoint fans by showing amazing Zelda footage at E3? wtf does that even mean?!), the game droughts, the constant delays, etc. There are so many other things they've done wrong that they'll have to seriously do a shit ton to get people to buy their next console. I'm not sure they stand a chance against Sony or MS if they make mid-gen console

They do kinda need a miracle. They probably need some new IP that will dramatically bring in a new audience that they don't have right now.

They need to be brutally honest with themselves about control inputs too. If you are going to bet the farm on a new control type, then you better really evaluate whether or not the new controller is truly a mind-blowing revolution that is immediately understandable to the consumer or not. If you have to explain why your product is revolutionary or worse come up with a reason as to why ... you should abandon this approach in R&D and change course.

They need an incredibly strong launch window, though I think they may have that as they're probably hoarding games (the "real" Animal Crossing, the next 3D Mario, perhaps a crossplatform Zelda U/NX).

They need to be much smarter and sharper than they have been in the past 6-7 years.
