Forums - Gaming - Why haven't Sony or MS copied Wii Play?

Maybe just wouldn't play as well as it does in the wii.

And about why they haven't done a smash brothers, they not have famous, legendary cast of characters to work with. That anime fighter might have worked but anime isn't that huge here and people won't see it as a smash brother type game but more like a dbz fighting game and theres loads of those.
We have a winner.

Because Wii Play in and of itself sucks monkey balls. It only sells well because of the bundled controller.

That's the whole point. Why doesn't Sony bundle a controller with some monkey balls?

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

It's like asking "Why hasn't Ferrari made a compact economy car like Honda?" They sure would sell a lot more of them then the cars they make now.

The simple answer is it's not there market. If you want that kind of thing, do what Sony execs do. Buy a Wii.

when I bought my 360 it way £279.l99 but I had the option of paying and extra £20 for a 2nd controller, PGR3 and a disk with 10 Live demos on it.

PGR3 has not for resale stamped across it and the game and controller were in a box together with something like 2nd controller bundle written accross it so they kinda did.

The fact this was only available to me when I purchased the 360 and it wasn't advertised - the assistant just asked me at the time "as you are purchasing this 360 you have the option of buying the 2nd controller bundle if you wish for an addition £20.00"

Does anyone wonder why Sony or MS haven't copied Wii Play? Seems it would be a simple matter to create some mini-game or demo, perhaps even a platinum title, to include with a controller and charge a couple bucks more. Is it pride or something?

GT5P would have seemed like the perfect time to adopt this strategy.

Funny you should ask Fishy, I made a post on gamespot a while back discussing the exact same thing. The answer is simple:

A. Nintendo games sell well. Microsoft and Sony games don't have the same brand name for software sales.

B. PS3 and 360 aren't systems that require multiple controllers. Many, many owners, only have one control, and all their multiplayer is online. Therefore, controller sales are less than the Wii.

C. Wii play sells off the software as well as the hardwares percieved value. Many Wii owners, view a minigame collection as an increased value. PS3 and 360 owners might not.

D. Controllers, are all expensive, including the Wiimote. However, early on, the Wiimote was supply constrained, and many people were forced to buy Wii-play to get the remote. To repeat this success, MS and Sony would have to create manufactured supply constraints, which wouldn't be viewed very favorably.

E. Once controllers are in the store, there is no getting them back. If Sony-Play failed, those remotes would go unsold. There is a risk with releasing software bundles with such little profit potential per unit.

The model could work for MS or Sony, but its far from free money, and I can definately see it failing, considering the userbase your selling too.

That said, the best time for Sony to do this is with the release of the new Duel Shock. To be successful, all of the DS controllers should be packaged without a larger pricetag, and a cheap game made by sony.

It just doesn't seem like their style. Not that Sony doesn't milk the consumers, just that they don't like to immediately and obviously copy a more successful company, because then they couldn't release PR statements being eliteist pricks about it.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I can almost imagine it MS/Sony controller bundled with super monkey balls.

i think first off, both 360 and ps3 has bundled versions. many of them, in fact, and special editions and all that.

but more importantly, the games in wii play is consistent with the philosophy with the wii/wiimote and introduces simple games to the non-gaming public. it also already has the "wii" franchise to work with, a natural extension. and the wiimote does actually need some demo-like games to show some people what can be done--at least i found the wiiplay games to be mildly interesting.

360 clearly doesn't have this natural extension. the sixaxis could have based something off on its motion control, but it was never the philosophy that the ps3 was advancing. so a bundled game with a controller would be kind of an awkward product for those two consoles.

nothing stops them from cashing in, of course, but it actually seems to me to be good governance they're not.

the Wii is an epidemic.
