Forums - Gaming - Why do Japanese developers take so long to make a single game?

From Smash Bros to Kingdom hearts, it seems that the development cycle takes way too long even unpredicatable lengths. For instance, Kingdom Hearts 3 was announced as "in development" as opposed to having a concreate release date. How come American companies pump a Call of Duty or Madden game each year yet Square Enix or Nintendo takes 5 to 6 years per game?

lol, this.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Because they take them to polish the gameplay and make it the best it can be. At least in most cases. And generally sequels are very different than their predecessors (examples being Persona, Final Fantasy, 3D Mario, etc.)

Of course, this isn't the case for all Japanese games. Hyperdimension Neptunia and Warriors games are released yearly, pretty much.

US developers like EA and 343 like to rush games to the market before they are finished in order to maximize profits. Meanwhile Japanese developers like Nintendo and Square like to take time to perfect the game so it is the best it can be

Are they reworking the whole game for the sequel?Isn't this too much work? Look how Mario Galaxy was release on 2007 and its sequel on 2010. Just because Nintendo EAD expanded on the game they already had.

A lot of the time, yes.

Just look at Final Fantasy XIII. That game took 6 years to develop, because it was made from the ground up. However, its sequels (FFXIII-2 and Lightning Returns) took about 2 years each, because they reused a lot of assets.

It's also important to recognize that massive JRPGs and most other Japanese games take more time and effort than the annual CODs and sports games (because those games really do share a lot with each other always).

because those have two teams working on it all the time. Fromsoftware, platinum games, koei and many other japanese studios are pumping the games quite fast and keep good standards

Which games? Are they working on a yearly basis? Are some of those not localized?

I wish we had someone on these forums who knows a bit about how Japanese studios work.
