Forums - Gaming - OPINION: Mainstream Gamers are the bane of this Industry's creativity and ideals

so basically what you want is for companies to stop catering to these 30~ million gamers with games they like, enjoy and want so they can make more games that you enjoy?

I don't like those games too but as someone already said as long as I got my niche JRPGs I could care less.

Any money going into the gaming industry is good. There's no wrong direction for the most part. if the companies are doing well, they'll take more chances with new IP's and bringing back old series. I depise sport games and I no longer play COD, AC, GTA, god of war, battlefield, halo, gears and far cry. I lost interest in them all for one reason or another but other people pay to play 'em and that money helps in some way produce the games that I want to play.

More money isnt always good if its supporting the wrong direction, new people who get into videogames will pick one of those mainstream games instead other games. These mainstream games get bigger and end up being monopolistic telling other games they have to be like them.

It's the wrong direction in your opinion. I don't like sport games. Does that mean that genre of games shouldn't exist or the number of being made should be toned down? No.

COD for awhile wasn't popular or mainstream until it's multiplayer caught on. Should the series be stopped because it's mainstream? No.

Is it preventing RPGs or platformers from being made or played? No.

Mainstream games are popular because they are well liked by ALOT of gamers. Should popular games be demonized for the sake of a minority of gamers? No

There's plenty of genres of games to play. I don't agree with your line of thinking.

Madden and COD do change every iteration, though. Maybe you don't play either enough to know, but they both make pretty dramatic changes every release.

The industry has always had popular mainstream games and smaller low budget titles. And the smaller titles have typically been the ones pushing new things, because the bigger titles are riskier to tinker with.

The only real change lately has been the growth of the market kind of imo creating a new category or layer of games on each end of the spectrum. You now have easily available mass quantity indie games on the cheap side and massively expensive juggernauts like your Call of Duty on the other. I don't think the expensive and "safe" massive titles hold the smaller ones back. If anything it makes those smaller titles possible. By extention you could say the big titles are responsible for innovation.

Sony said not long ago that they lose money on a lot of their games. What do you think offsets those losses? Your Uncharteds and GT games etc etc. It's like when an actor says they take the big budget flick with less acting depth required type of job so they can make the money to fund or make up for smaller more artistic roles.

The shuhei interview was something like 1o games launched 6-7 lost money 3-2 break even and only one would make real money... so they really depend on the blockbuster to be able to release diferent experiences.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

It is a crime that Fifa and COD sell by the bucketload, and amazing stuff like Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101 fall in the niche sales category. Oh well at least the industry is thriving and Indies are carving out interesting games like Affordable space adventures etc.

I do hate it when brilliant game franchises are dumbed down for the mainstream gamer ie Resident Evil becoming an all out action shooter. I mean its fine if its a spin off or something, but please keep the original classics within the original format, that's how they became classics in the first place.

OPINION: Indies are the saviors of this Industry's creativity and ideals. And thanks to PS+ and Games with Gold mainstream gamers get a good collection of selected indies which could broaden their horizon and raise a passion for more creative/innovative games.

In a way.

Many Mainstream series are stalling in their development, probably for 2 main reasons:

First, it works that way. Never change a running system, as they say. And it's also less expensive to do so.

Also, they might fear a "they changed it, now it sucks" reaction from the series' fans.

The main problem with this is that everyone wants to cash in into a successful series' genre by creating their own knockoff product, which is why the market is flooded by shooters and why so many MMO tried to copy WoW (and quickly went under) for example.

It keeps these companies afloat and brings them good money, which is good for them. Sadly, few use this income to invest into less mainstream products. Ubisoft does so from time to time with games like Child of Light, japanese developers too (which sadly stay in japan most of the time), but EA and Activision barely do anything but milking their series and studios to death, and buy new popular IPs/Studios when needing new material.

It does have it's perks, however. All this stalling results in a very healthy Indie game scene where both new and dismissed old ideas come to life. The main problem here is the need to filter the good, bad and ugly parts of these games by yourself, as news about these games are rare and far between, and there are no real big Indie games magazines/websites where you can do so easely. Due to this they have to rely on word of mouth for their product as they get almost no Mainstream exposure or recognition.

On a personal note, this lack of development and stalling at points I don't like has almost driven me away from gaming. My last game from EA was Dragon Age: Origins, from Ubisoft, apart from Child of Light I can't even remember which one was my last title from them and for Activision Blizzard it's even Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction, and I have no Uplay, Origin or Battle.net account. I became an avid Retrogamer and Indiegamer due to this and Nintendo my only console company I even consider buying due to Virtual console, Indiegame lineup and general retro feeling of their games.

Thankfully, the outlook seems shifting more and more away from this, at least on PC. With Kickstarter and smaller developers/publishers like Stardock and Paradox Interactive new ideas and old stars are shining again, giving me a new hope that not all is lost to the mainstream community.

What I am trying to say is to add more gameplay elements to these games and stop making a game that people have to pay $60 a year when there is barely anything worth about it(or if anything do a game every 2 to 3 not every year).

Bets:

(Won)Bet with TechoHobbit: He(Techno) says 10 million by January 1,2014 I say 9 million by then. Winner gets 2 weeks of sig control.

(Lost)Bet with kinisking: I say Ps4 will win April NPD while he says Xbox One will win it; winner gets 1 week of avatar control.

Raichu's First Series:

First RPG?

First Fighter?

First Racer?

First Shooter?

First MMO?

First Horror?

Official Ni No Kuni Fanboy:

Familiars Captured:37

Game Beaten: 2 times almost

I'm curious what you want these sports games to add every year that they are not adding?
