Mario maker seems to be like four classic games in one (I am almost positive fans will recreate the original levels and post them online), and it has the potential to be greater (people hack those games to create impossible/speed runs, now they don't have to). Xenoblade seems to be the most gamer oriented game this year (by nintendo), but mario maker seems to be the most casual friendly (out of all developers). It would be wise for them to make this their next biggest hit (it seems to be the only game that truly revolves around the gamepad in a genuine way), as it could possibly get the wii u to gamecube numbers if done right. Yes, I agree that delaying zelda was a huge blow, but that does not take away from the potential of mario maker.

I just don't see how a game like this can even come close to being their "next greatest hit," though. I see it as a sister to games like Captain Toad or Kirby's Rainbow Curse. I just can't see how anyone can expect it to suddenly be the Wii U's Smash Bros of 2015, casual or not.
I especially don't see it boosting Wii U sales. Like not even a little bit. I never even thought about that until you brought it up. I was only talking about its own software sales. No offense to Mario Maker, but a year where a game like that is slated as Nintendo's biggest game is a seriously depressing year.

It is a budget title, but one that does not throw a small game at you, rather one that throws tools to the community to make games. In the same vein as little big planet or minecraft. I do think it is their next big hit, because this should be the next step up for their 2d platformers (just like the 'new' series was back in the day), and it bridges the gap between people who want to create mario games (the fact that it is mario makes this huge) but don't have the experience of a developer.
Effectively, Nintendo sets up a framework, and the community becomes the developer (a third party if you will), meaning that over time, this game may have more content than triple A titles, despite being a budget game. I believe this game will be the year's most profitable success for Nintendo.
Of course, this all depends on how they market and sell the game. It being mario and no direct competitor existing, this game can become crazy through word of mouth, but very good marketing will make this game go a long way.
