Apple doesn't have the issues that Nintendo does because they have so much content on their devices. They also successfully understood how to make an electronics brand a fashion statement, something no other company really has been able to contend with, and Nintendo would be so far out of their marketing element even trying to match that level of brand swag. Nintendo needs to resort more to singular "home run" type phenonemons otherwise they run out of gas. That's just how it goes for Nintendo. And the Wii was very definitely running out of gas after 2009, the signs were fairly evident long before the ill-fated Wii U, so blaming everything on the Wii U is a bit disingenious. Casuals don't need a game console period. If I'm a casual what do I need a $300 game playing device for? Wii Sports/Fit was a fun little fad, but don't confuse two things ... just because a girl wants to dance with you for five minutes doesn't mean she wants to marry you. iPhone/Android fans satisfy all the needs of casual gamers in ways Nintendo really couldn't ever compete with. To be honest, there's nothing Nintendo really could've done. The iPhone was just an impending tsunami coming at them that was going to hit them no matter what, and unless they made the iPhone before Apple made it, nothing was really changing that. In hindsight there's nothing they could've done. I've had casual friends over to play the Wii U, the ones that basically can't play anything but Wii Sports ... and they had a *great* time with Nintendo Land. The laughter in my house was so loud actually I thought I might get a complaint from my neighbors. But none of them bought the system. Being a quality product just wasn't enough, gaming isn't a "need" for them, sure they like Nintendo Land or Mario, but they like Angry Birds too, but Angry Birds is always with them and is free ... Wii U and Nintendo Land is $350. Not surprising which way casuals went. |
I didn't blame it all on Wii U, I also said the final years of Wii played a big part in it as well which from 2011-2013 Wii basically became nothing more than a Just Dance/Skylanders box.
I think it's pretty ignorant/naive to believe there was absolutely nothing that could have been done to keep some of that audience, it's easy to look back and say Wii was simply a fad that could only sell well for 4 years but u keep ignoring that Nintendo basically abandoned the thing after 4 years, of course people are going to move onto other devices.
When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.
You are missing new first-party games. I don't want to see so many Mario games every generation, I want to see games like Bayonetta 2 on NX!
I mostly disagree with this or don't feel they are relevant points, the only part of this I think Nintendo needs to worry about for success is point 1, marketing. You missed some very key things like making the hardware attractive to users, and having a steady stream of hit software. They also need to have hardware that has useful and convenient applications which benefit our experience in ways no other products currently do. Look how many people have smart devices today, compared to 6 years ago. The idea of a tablet market sounded a little silly at first, but nowadays it seems silly that we even thought that way. Tablets do a lot more than just gaming, they integrate with Macs and PCs, store music, documents, work as Internet surfing devices. If you want the time, the weather, the latest headlines, all you need is your tablet.
Probably most importantly, Nintendo needs a good reason to have its users use their product every single day, and think about it a great deal when they're not using it. Not just that, but other people have to look at it and see that their lives would be better if they had one too.
Onto what I disagree or think is a non factor on the list:
Focusing on "core gamers" is a stupid and backwards strategy at this point. It's a declining and fracturing market full of nerdy antisocial infantilized holier than thou dorks who will always hate Nintendo anyway. What Nintendo needs to do is focus on ALL gamers, especially their own fanbase, which has gigantic potential. Nintendo shouldn't be looking at selling 65 million consoles and being the TOP CORE COMPANY! They should be seeing how they can sell 400 million pieces of hardware.
2017 is too late.
Confusing consumers and proper price points are non-factors. That's like saying, "don't put killer bees nests in the console box."
Using PC-like hardware and backwards compatibility either can't happen together, or won't result in a proper price point.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Only if you post bad things. So to answer your question directly, yes. |
Ouch that burn is so painful I can feel it from here, nice going though since everyone should know the NX will not be the new homeconsole. Neither does Nintendo has enough sense these days to be Sony or MS in therms of homeconsoles and third party.
Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar
9. Prepare big games for launch! This one of the reasons why I think NX is 2017. thing.
6. and 7. are questionable.

Too late for what?
And yet Nintendo confused consumers with Wii U.
"2. Focus on core gamers!"
lol
It's not that simple, almost every core gamer skip nintendo consoles for a reason

and it's conflicting with number 4 for sure
