So what does the average atheist think about life after death?

You would have to ask every atheist to find that out. I could only speak for myself, and I'm not an authority on the diversity of what Atheists think, outside of what the definition requires them to think. For me, any person(s) claiming to have any absolute truth about what happens to each individuals consciousness after death, EITHER way, is speaking from a position of ignorance. The answer is, we don't know.

Atheists are notorious as a whole for denying the existence of any intelligent agency. It's fair to say the movement is characterized by a belief in randomness. The universe has no creator, it was randomly created by the suddent movement of molecules that have somehow always existed.
Further, the quintessential atheist adheres to the formula that form creates consciousness. And when form (matter) is disintegrated then so is the consciousness since this is merely a product of random electrochemical firing in the brain. Therefore any meaning to life is merely a social construction. How could an atheist possibly explain an afterlife under these circumstances?
The sage knows that consciousness creates form not the other way around. Hermes states the universe is mental. The universe is living mind/living energy.
