Forums - Sony - Sony now Calls the PS Vita a “Legacy Platform” Outside of Japan/Asia

I remember a time when I thought connectivity between Vita and PS3/PS4 might renew interest in the system and potentially snowball it into a success. Streaming console games onto a handheld, using the second screen in a Wii U fashion, etc. Everyone dreamed about crazy cool connection stuff and bundles containing both systems and all sorts of stuff. But I guess that just didn't happen.

Yeah me to, i thought PS4 might boost Vita interest. Also expected some cool local multiplayer stuff. Worst thing is i feel like they never really tried, especially in the game department. One big game could have changed it's future, make it sale decently atleast.

At this point I think they'd be insane to. The decline between the 7th gen handhelds and 8th gen handhelds is pretty staggering.

The strange part is, game announcements seem to be ramping up on the thing from 3rd parties. Physical Sword Art Online: Lost Song western physical release in particular has taken me by surprise today.

Yeah but that leaves no competition for Nintendo in the handheld market. Competition is a godo thing :(

Well, they have to fight an ever more competitive mobile/tablet scene. It's pretty clear that's where the PSP owners went.

I really hope Nintendo's next system truly is a home console and handheld console running on the same OS and running the same games. That would hopefully help secure a bit more diversity in their handheld lineup. However, in Japan, it doesn't look like the Vita is going anywhere anytime soon. This is also the market mainly driving 3DS software now too, so the competition part should continue for a while.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Thanks sony, #4theplayers

Am I the only one that thinks its a sad state of affairs?
That mobiles kill the handhelds? I dont get why the vita doesnt sell more (apart from its price), its a great system.

Mobile hasnt killed handhelds really. Pricing/card pricing and lack of first party and Sony saying quite awhile go that they were just dropping support for it in general is what killed Vita imo.

I agree that it's a great system, but Sony flacked on its potential, which is disappointing. The same thing Nintendo has done with Wii U. Potential squandered

Disinterest has made more goods things come out of Nintendo than competition.

I really don't like the logic that competition is good. It's not even good for prices, because the competition between Nintendo and Sony has driven both companies to launch $250+ handhelds, and that subsequently got both into trouble.

You have no competition, you have no room for improvement and you become complacennt when one person holds the monopoly. Less options. Competition will always be good imo

Nintendo's never faced this kind of competetion in the portable gaming space before.

I'm sure if given a choice they would happily go back to the days where smartphones didn't exist and all they had to worry about was Sony's PSP. That was a cake walk by comparison.

The way Sony handled Vita in the west is one of gaming's biggest sins.

Sony, if you'd just open op the Vita and let the homebrew community roam free, the Vita might again see a light uptick. It could really be the next PSP then.

I don't see the handheld situation as dire as people make it out to be atm
