Well, they have to fight an ever more competitive mobile/tablet scene. It's pretty clear that's where the PSP owners went.

I really hope Nintendo's next system truly is a home console and handheld console running on the same OS and running the same games. That would hopefully help secure a bit more diversity in their handheld lineup. However, in Japan, it doesn't look like the Vita is going anywhere anytime soon. This is also the market mainly driving 3DS software now too, so the competition part should continue for a while.
