Sorry, but that is just stupid. That's like saying "I slept through a tornado once and nothing happened then." |

| superchunk said: I read the article, I get the point that in this exact case the child was not in any real danger. But, that is not the point. Leaving a child in a car by themselves should be illegal and no-one under any circumstances. I definitely don't see her getting jail time anyways. Probably just a warning since the child was not in any real danger. But, the simple fact is, if you are going somewhere and you know you will not be able to take the kids out of the car with your for whatever reason, don't go. Do it later with help from other adults or leave the kids with someone else. |
Dude, you just said you live in Arizona. This was around chicago. Realize that there is about zero risk of the kid getting baked alive in the northern US during the cold season. Even on the majority of summer days except maybe the hottest few of the summer.
On the other hand on the coldest of days even a few minutes outdoors could cause alot of harm. The US is a big country, climates can be very different from state to state. Here I have never heard of any child dying from being left in the car... because it does not get hot enough.
It should be obvious when the parent is in the right or wrong by leaving their child in the car. Do things need to be so black and white? I think thats the real issue here, is that the cops are being tools about this and refuse to acknowledge the fact that every event that takes place on this planet is never exactly the same.

not to nit pick but that is exactly the point. the woman was not far from the car, it was cold outside (hello, December in Chicago) and it was only a couple minutes. Not like she stood outside talking for 30 minutes to an hour with someone while it got cold in the car. This police officer obviously had a stick up his/her ass and I hope he/she gets severly reprimanded for it.
thats terrible. you just cant leave a child unattended. doesnt fucking matter.
As long as the car is within sight, there should be no punishment. What if she had stepped outside her car and leaned on it for 10 minutes? How far is too far? Is there a law for the distance that is legal and illegal? Is 1 yard legal? 2 yards? 5 yards? There needs to be a law defining what is correct and not. It's a very grey situation that is being painted black and white by the police and this one poster superchunk, who from the sounds of it doesn't even have kids, otherwise he'd understand the difficulty of carting your kids around everywhere when it's not necessary.
If this was in Arizona it would be a big deal. Kids die all the time that way. Seeing as it was in Chicago I dunno...

Leaving babies in the car is fine, that' what those spinning toys are for, keep them occupied.

WTF is wrong with you people not seeing the real fault here. She should have not done any charity. There would have been no problem whatsoever.
You see? The lesson here is to not do charity.
I remember once I went to see a movie and left my daughter in the car (She was one at the time) but it was okay because I left the air-con on.
