Tales of Xillia 2 suffered with a silent protagonist, but Zelda flourishes with a silent Link. I think it just depends really.
I prefer them chattier, as long as they prove to have a good personality. I don't mind silent characters, as long as the other characters compliment his silence. Like Claude from GTA III.
I like both, but prefer silent if I had to pick one.

I usually don't care, as long as the main protagonist doesn't have an annoying voice.
"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."
Depends on the game really but most of my favourite characters are spoken, so there you go.
Grew up without voice acting on every little bit of text.
Im not really for or against it, sometimes Id go so far as to say id prefer silence to bad voice acting.
Spoken Protagonists - Especially those who always have a good saying (Nathan Drake)!
I really does sound like it depends on the game.
Im surprise this pole is so close, goes to show theres (potentially) lots of money to be saved from not doing it :P
For me it really depends. i dont want Link to talk, but i like shulk talking in xenoblade Chronicles
