Nintendo president Satoru Iwata addressed the topic of region locking during the Q&A portion of the company’s latest financial results briefing.

Iwata stated that Nintendo is thinking internally about what steps need to be taken to make NX region-free. Additionally, the Big N is aware that people want a region free system, and he is “thinking positively” about region free. A decision has not been made internally about whether or not NX will be region-free.

Iwata was also quick to point out that doing away with region-locking for current hardware is “unrealistic”.

Step one, don't add region locking
Step two, done.

 

Also, region locking could be removed from the 3ds and wiiu with a firmware update, if they were genuinely considering nx being region free why would they cling to region locking on the 3ds and wiiu?

because then they'd lose one of their selling points in the future for NX. When they release NX they can be like ''completely region free!'' like its a brand new thing lol

I assume that at the very least they would have to 'prepare' the eShop for such a shift. It would be a bit weird if you could still only access the eShop of the region you bought the system from. I guess there would have to be a way to switch the eShop region you're browsing on the fly? Not sure how PSN and others handle this.

Sony manages to make EVERY console region free, even in bloody china! Maybe Sony is the best at it, but come on maybe if you just TRY it will happen!
